OCTOBER 12--Sure, nobody seems to know anything about Supreme Court nominee Harriet Miers's judicial philosophy, abortion position, or conservative bona fides. But here's something not open for debate: the old gal loves exclamation points and seemed to enjoy writing gushy notes to then-Governor George W. Bush. Below you'll find copies of personal correspondence exchanged between Bush and Miers from 1995-2000 (before migrating to Washington, Miers headed the Texas State Lottery Commission, a post to which Bush appointed her). The Bush-Miers letters were among more than 2000 pages of documents released this week by the Texas State Library and Archives Commission. In a 1997 Hallmark greeting card (adorned with a photo of a dog), Miers sent along belated birthday wishes and noted that "You are the best governor ever--deserving of great respect!" In another note (penned on an American Greetings card), Miers wrote that she hoped Bush's daughters realized that their parents were "cool." A 1995 Miers note thanked Bush for a visit, adding that an airplane ride with the governor was "Cool!" Sadly, the document dump did not include Miers's e-mail or IM messages, which are surely filled with loads of sappy emoticons. (18 pages)

I think it is shameful that private correspondence is posted. I remained single for many years. I had a close relationship with one of my bosses and what I read here reminds me of that. Since I was rather shy and quiet, but hard working and fiercely loyal, our relationship was not understood by everyone in the office. There was definitely a personal element to it, but it was in no way romantic. It was closer akin to sister to adoring brother. I later got to know my bosses' wife and I eventually became closer to her than him. They became like a second family, which I needed since I was away from mine. Too much should not be read into this. It's really a shame they are now public.

These are just some of the documents that have been released. I'm not sure what "making a big deal of" them means. There's a bunch of cards - again, this is just personal correspondance that was released. Would it be better to ignore it all?

You're also not a supreme court nominee. It's the law that they are now public. A country in which "private" correspondance of people in and seeking the highest offices of the land is top secret is a scary country... not ours.
Do you think Clintons medical records and Kerry's Navy records should have stayed private too?

What the heck are you talking about? These are letters between the person who appointed a USSCJ nominee and the nominee. They are a matter of public record.
How is publishing them an "attack?"

They're not part of an argument, they're part of the public record.
if you see them as an attack, it says more about your position than it does about the documents, which are neutral at worst.

ALL correspondance was released. That's the law. If you don't like it, get it changed, but don't try to have it reinterpreted to fit your wishes rather than using the constitutional route. THAT is the liberal way. I expect better from FReepers.
