Iraqi police commandos have aborted a "terror campaign" planned by Al-Qaeda in Iraq to disrupt the constitutional referendum in two days' time, a senior officer said.
"In all, 17 car bombs have been found, 17 members of the network killed and 65 others arrested," Colonel Ali Abu al-Hassan of the controversial Wolf Brigade told media following an offensive on the southern outskirts of Baghdad.
"During the operation, which was launched following tips from intelligence sources and which ended this morning, terrorist hideouts were surrounded in the Sayafia and Arab Jubur neighborhoods," the police officer added.
"The cell's aim was to strike Baghdad on referendum day," when 15.5 million Iraqis are to vote on a proposed constitution for the post-Saddam Hussein era. Firefights between the troops and suspected rebels lasted 48 hours.

YES!
Take those 65 that were arrested and send them on a short road trip in those rigged with explosive cars.
Probably "controversial" because they're so successful. Lefties hate that.
"...17 car bombs have been found, 17 members of the network killed..."
Interesting mathematical correlation... ;)
That sounds allright.
That is why the are "controversial" - they get the job done...
This can't be true. I didn't see it on the Commie News Network or any of the alphabet networks.
Those captured 65 will give you another 65....then those 65 will give you another 65. Michael Yon said this is called a cascade...and the intel boys love it.
Send them on that road trip afterwards.
I hate liberal reporters. They disgust me. They contribute to the deaths of innocent people and prolong wars.
Iraq has about one-tenth the population of the US. What if we had the same proportion of civilian bomb deaths here, say several hundred per day. Would a task force to root out the terrorists be called "controversial" no matter what methods they used?
Great news bump!
Well put!
More controversy like this please. Go Wolves!
Nice work, Iraqis.
Get some more.
What's controversial about the Wolf Brigade? The Iraqis are inordinately proud of them because it's hard to tell the difference between them and the American soldiers. They are the most competent and capable of all the Iraqi soldiers.
I have yet to see bin Laden, Zarqawi or the rest of the scum tagged with the dreaded "controversial" by the MSM. That's reserved for our side.
"They are the most competent and capable of all the Iraqi soldiers."
Yes, and they don't mess around with panties.
I LOATHE the media
