Waiting for the hearings.
What my senator has to say about Miers:
DeWine gave Miers a strong endorsement in an interview Monday with The Associated Press after her nomination was announced.
"The fact that she will bring diversity to the court, in that she's not a sitting judge, is a good thing," DeWine said. "Most of the members on the court today have pretty much the same background. It's better to have someone with a different path, a different background. Some of our more distinguished Supreme Court (justices) came from a different background."
Most recently, the late Chief Justice William Rehnquist had not served as a judge before President Nixon put him on the Supreme Court in 1972. In all, 20 Supreme Court justices had never served as judges before.
DeWine said it was too early to say if Miers' confirmation process would go smoothly, but he added, "I think she will be confirmed."
DeWine would like to believe he has gained some political capital by serving last spring as one of 14 Senate peacemakers who helped avoid a business-halting showdown over Bush's other federal judge nominations.
"I'm proud of what I've done on the Judiciary Committee," DeWine said.
