with runners on third and second and less than two outs, you probably don't want to throw to first or chase the batter to tag him if you don't have to.

Bigsigh,

Please read the rules, the base umpires cannot help on this play unless the umpire making the call requests help, and you also need to read the rules as to when that "help" actually applies.

Sorry about that...I should revise and extend my statements to say "with two outs, if there is a third strike, run down to first (on offense) and tag or throw down to first (on defense)..."

I've just been fuming all night over here...and I'm more of a Dodger fan than an Angel fan (yes, I know, that's like my admitting I voted for Dukakis in '88...I was politically stuck on stupid then), but I like Scioscia and the team.

They'd better start getting some production from #1 and #3, or they should make them ride the pine pony for a game and insist to them that either they produce, or they sit.

I was in the minors in the late 60s. In one league, the Florida State, our instructions were to make the call, if the plate umpire did not call out and we saw the ball caught. In the other league, the Midwest we used the ask for help method as you say. I must admit that I defer to current practice. It's been a while since I put on the mask and I may have the leagues reversed.

In this case it was so close, I don't think anyone knew for sure unless they did a 5 min video stop-action analysis.

I've been an Angel fan since LA Wrigley Field. The difference nowadays is that they have a solid club and will get over it.

The ump blew the call. Everyone knows it. It just created a nation of Angels' fans.

And I know i'm dumb. But at least I can spell. exitement?

Excellent.

When a batter becomes a base runner on a third strike not caught by the catcher and starts for the dugout, or his position, and then realizes his situation and attempts then to reach first base, he is not out unless he or first base is tagged before he reaches first base.

Bingo. The Angel catcher should have "realized the situation".

It's not really practical to help on these plays. It's different than a check swing. It's like a fielder trapping or catching the ball. Usually the play goes through and then there is a challenge by the team the call went against. Then the umps will confer to see if anyone had a better shot at the play.

In the old days if we didn't have an angle, we would look to the other, but of course in the bigs that leads to more challenges.

In the minors, we would work with 1 partner every night and we would get faily good at looking for help.

I remember being inside the base paths on the 2nd base side of second. Runners on first and third. I'd have a pick off play at first and on the next pitch the catcher would fire to third where there would be a swip tag. Fun stuff.

Ok, I took some pics from the same MLB.com video I linked to above taking a picture of the screen.

These are directly unedited pictures right from my camera with the video paused.

You Be the judge, and ask yourself how does a baseball get from the position in picture #3 to the position in picture #4, hmmm.... Take note of the mitt position as well.:

These are all from 57-58 seconds in the mlb video on their website.

In this play - if in fact it had been caught on the bounce (which it wasn't)-- it is exactly as if it was in play the same as if it were a bunt or weak ground ball etc...

The batter cannot run around foul territory going to first.

Going to first one has to go in the base line.

I stated no position on the "catch" except that it was probably too close for the ump to call with any certainty and that he may not be able to see it with the mitt actually blocking his view. When we have the benefit of stop-action we can increase our accuracy. But that's not how the game is run.

Batter is out going to first if he runs out of the base line.

please cite a rule. I believe the rule on the play is if you are trying to tag him you are right. But if there is no play the batter can run until he enters the dugout. I defer to someone with a cite.

GO READ THE RULES..... man you are really something. It is obvious you know nothing about the rules of baseball.

YOU ARE WRONG, AND CAN'T EVEN ACKNOWLEDGE IT.

He could have walked all the way back to the dugout without stepping into it, than ran all the way to first and would have been safe.

sheesh, do you read replies or just state the same old false pretenses?

Not snippy, just true.

It was a bush league stunt.

Black Sox ride again.

It's sad because Chicago was the class of the league this year. But class no longer is a term that can be applied to them.

Just saw the play on the channel 4 news in LA. Looked like a catch on the regular speed run and the slo-mo. The ump has his hand out with his palm down. After a second or two he makes a fist and pumps his right hand, seeming to indicate out, if this is not his regular strike call. Got to know what he says, because the catcher does not see hand motions.

my name is an inside joke.

Not everyone knows the ump blew the call, thats why its controversial.

The only thing most could agree on is that you are a dope.

NO HE IS NOT....

He never ran outside the baseline. Look at the video again please, 39- 47 seconds... Sheesh...

And then go read the rules again or maybe once in your case......

The outstretched hand signals NO Contact. (your first frame).

No.

And clinched fist indicates strike out.

The lengths some people will go to rationalize this.

Eeven ozzie Guillen says he takes this as luck. He said better to be lucky than good.

They got lucky their sciming cather got the umps to fall for his ruse.

Forget channel 4, do your own onvestigation by using the official Major League Video from their site.

It will open in a player window and then you can zoom in all you want, pause play, etc....
