with runners on third and second and less than two outs, you probably don't want to throw to first or chase the batter to tag him if you don't have to.

Please read the rules, the base umpires cannot help on this play unless the umpire making the call requests help, and you also need to read the rules as to when that "help" actually applies.
Sorry about that...I should revise and extend my statements to say "with two outs, if there is a third strike, run down to first (on offense) and tag or throw down to first (on defense)..."
I've just been fuming all night over here...and I'm more of a Dodger fan than an Angel fan (yes, I know, that's like my admitting I voted for Dukakis in '88...I was politically stuck on stupid then), but I like Scioscia and the team.
They'd better start getting some production from #1 and #3, or they should make them ride the pine pony for a game and insist to them that either they produce, or they sit.

In the old days if we didn't have an angle, we would look to the other, but of course in the bigs that leads to more challenges.
In the minors, we would work with 1 partner every night and we would get faily good at looking for help.
I remember being inside the base paths on the 2nd base side of second. Runners on first and third. I'd have a pick off play at first and on the next pitch the catcher would fire to third where there would be a swip tag. Fun stuff.

I stated no position on the "catch" except that it was probably too close for the ump to call with any certainty and that he may not be able to see it with the mitt actually blocking his view. When we have the benefit of stop-action we can increase our accuracy. But that's not how the game is run.
please cite a rule. I believe the rule on the play is if you are trying to tag him you are right. But if there is no play the batter can run until he enters the dugout. I defer to someone with a cite.

He could have walked all the way back to the dugout without stepping into it, than ran all the way to first and would have been safe.

It's sad because Chicago was the class of the league this year. But class no longer is a term that can be applied to them.
Just saw the play on the channel 4 news in LA. Looked like a catch on the regular speed run and the slo-mo. The ump has his hand out with his palm down. After a second or two he makes a fist and pumps his right hand, seeming to indicate out, if this is not his regular strike call. Got to know what he says, because the catcher does not see hand motions.
Not everyone knows the ump blew the call, thats why its controversial.
The only thing most could agree on is that you are a dope.
