Germany's outgoing chancellor, Gerhard Schröder, took swipes at Britain and America yesterday as he announced that he would not be part of the next government.
In a speech to trade unionists in his home town of Hanover, he criticised Tony Blair over his vision for the future of the European Union.
Gerhard Schröder yesterday
"I say to my British friend that people in Germany, in Europe, do not want complete denationalisation," he said. "They want a state that is not in front of their nose but at their side."
He criticised the Bush administration over its handling of the Hurricane Katrina disaster, saying that the mistakes and delays emphasised the need for a strong state to help people.
"I could name countries, but the office I still hold forbids that - but everybody knows I mean America," he added to laughter.
Mr Schroder was given a standing ovation after saying: "I will not belong to the next government, definitely not." He appeared to wipe away tears.
Coalition talks between Mr Schroder's Social Democrats and the conservative alliance led by Angela Merkel, who is to be the new chancellor, begin on Monday.
Just a very small man trying to make himself significant but failing miserably. So long you puke!
And yet they vote for candidates that runs against leaders of other countries. Europeans are have a serious problem with self-confidence right now.
I've got a serious editing problem too.
A graceless farewell from a graceless administration. He was, at least, consistent.
"I will not belong to the next government, definitely not."
Well said. Don't let the door... oh you know the rest.
What a bitter little wanker.
A class act all the way! Auf Wiedersehen Gerhard! And don't let the tur hit you in the asche on the way out!
So with his new job, will he move to Russia...or can we say the rooster is going back to the hen house???...or can we say the KGB has recalled him???
Well, just don't let the door hit ya on the way out, little herr.
Oh, give it a rest. When the European governments have to deal with a major hurricane, then maybe Schroder can criticize. But not until then.
I hear that Chavez is hiring!
How does one say "Sore Loserman" in German?
I'll have to disagree with you. Based on this:
"people in Germany, in Europe, do not want complete denationalisation"
He is a nationalist as well as a socialist. You know - a National Socialist.
scheisen dorfen
It took some time to loosen his grip...but the germans got rid of the old ego maniac basturd... ;o)
Don't let the door hit you on the way out.
