Bush Slams Syria for Interference in Iraq, Lebanon

WASHINGTON, Oct. 12, 2005 – President Bush today accused the Syrian government of looking the other way as suicide-bent insurgents flow across its border into Iraq to commit mayhem.

"We expect Syria to do everything in her power to shut down the transshipment of suiciders and killers into Iraq. We expect Syria to be a good neighbor to Iraq," Bush said during a White House press conference that included outgoing Polish President Aleksander Kwasniewski. Poland has sent troops to support coalition efforts in Iraq.

Syria, which has a one-party Baathist government, also appears to be guilty of continued meddling in Lebanon, Bush said. This circumstance, he said, runs contrary to the opinion of responsible nations in the free world.

"It's very important for Syria to understand that the free world respects Lebanese democracy and expects Syria to honor that democracy," Bush said.

Bowing to international pressure, the Syrians recently removed their troops and intelligence services from Lebanese territory. However, an ongoing U.N. investigation, the Mehlis Report, points to possible Syrian involvement in the assassination of former Lebanese Premier Rafik Hariri.

Bush declined to comment on possible implications for Syria if it had anything to do with Hariri's death, citing the need to wait for the Mehlis Report's conclusions. Meanwhile, the world "expects Syria to honor the democracy in the country of Lebanon," he said.

Free nations also "expect Syria not to agitate killers in the Palestinian territories," Bush said, noting there's been "good progress toward peace in the Holy Land."

Yet, Bush reiterated his concern that "foreign countries, such as Syria, might try to disrupt the peace process through encouraging terrorist activities."

Meanwhile, the United States continues to work with friends and allies to send a clear message to the Syrian government that "there are expectations involved for countries that want to be accepted in the international community," Bush said.

The administration knows that Syria has an explicit policy of keeping the US "tied down" in Iraq as a means of protecting itself.

They are doing everything possible to feed the war machine in Iraq, short of providing actual troops.

It is inevitable that Syria will be take down. Once Iraq is stable and our military resources begin to point towards Damascus, they will collapse politically. There is no way we will leave the area with Syria and Iran fomenting terrorism in Iraq..

One more bullet comment for the OSF Road To War Brief (under development).

all the gates of hell will open on the U.S. if it attempts to attack Syria."

Same BS we heard from Iraq. Bush has got to stop dicking around with Syria. Talk will not work and our guys are getting chewed up by IED's that start in Syria.

It's funny how Syria is supporting the terrorists against the US in Iraq. Especially since Al Zawahiri has staed that if Al Queada wins in Iraq Syria, Lebanon and Jordan are next.

I realize that an attack on Syria by coalition forces might be like opening a kind of "pandoras box". But I think I am not the only one who is getting tired of words and nothing more being used against the Syrians. Theyre lying about thier involvement as a conduit for terrorists entering Iraq. We know it and they know it. We have directed offensive after offensive against towns bordering Syria. The terrorists are not hanging out so close to the border just because they want to make Syria look bad. Who knows how many coalition troops and innocent civilians have been killed thanks to Syrias help. Its time for the gloves to come off, say in the form of a few well placed MOABs on Damascus' military infrastructure.

Many Americans expect you, Mr. President, to do more about Syria than just keep talking while our soldiers keep dying (thanks to Syria and Iran's meddling in Iraq). Let's roll!

'Expect then Inspect" - Famous words of Big Blue. Bus knows what he is doing here. When the expectation is not met, we will inspect with Abrams and Company..

I agree we must deal with Syria and I believe we will. We don't want two fronts right now in Iraq. Soon, Iraq will be stable and then we will deal with them . Then, when Syria has collapsed politically or militarily, we head to Iran, IMO.
