I read a book once that said that there was a string of Texas towns on a single highway called Alice, Comfort, and Louise. Apparently a hotel in Comfort came up with the motto, "Sleep in Comfort between Alice and Louise".

In the past century "lick" was a common term for spring as in fresh water spring.
In the past century "lick" was a common term for spring as in fresh water spring.
Thus French Lick is named for the famous hot water springs in that area, probably discovered by settlers from France or named by their neighbors. The other towns in this thread with lick in their title, like Lizard's Lick indicates a place where a pioneer saw a lizard drinking safe water, and so on . . .
I recall visiting Kentucky and seeing creeks with the name "lick" as the second word, much as we would use the word branch.
Hygiene, Colorado

I like Flinderation, Six and Gunville, all in WV.
In New Jersey there is a town called Mahwah, a town called Ho-Ho-Kus, and my personal favorite - Cheesequake.
Off of I-75 near the Kentucky/Ohio border is a Big Bone Lick State Park. According to the atlas, nearby is a small town named Beaverlick.
