Rick Santorum or John Cornyn would have been shoe-ins. Did you follow the Ashcroft confirmation? There is absolutely no way that Santorum would be a shoo-in.

Ashcroft was a former Senator by that time. And he was confirmed, wasn't he?

As for Cornyn...he's supporting Miers.

I never suggested Cornyn should fight Miers. Just replace her as the nominee when she is withdrawn.

Yes, 58 yea votes for a position not nearly as critical to the Democrats as the Supreme Court. Your words were shoo-in...and Santorum wouldn't be that. I mean come on...let's appreciate not just what's at stake but how this fight would actually be waged.
