COVINGTON, Louisiana (Reuters) - First lady Laura Bush joined her husband in defending his nominee to the U.S. Supreme Court on Tuesday and said it was possible some critics were being sexist in their opposition to Harriet Miers.
"That's possible, I think that's possible," Mrs. Bush said when asked on NBC's "Today Show" whether criticism that Miers lacked intellectual heft were sexist in nature. She said Miers' accomplishments as a lawyer were a role model to young women.
...
Mrs. Bush, who had publicly supported the nomination of a woman to the high court, noted that Miers had been president of the Texas Bar Association.
"I know Harriet well, I know how accomplished she is, I know how many times she's broken the glass ceiling herself. She is a role model for young women around our country," she said.

Note: Marshall "spoke forcefully on behalf of the new constitution".
Has Meiers spoken forcefully on behalf of any cause?

No offense but please quit
every thread with this nonsense. This isn't 1800 and 'Harry' Miers
ain't John Marshall.
BTW just curious, what was you're MOS? You're home page doesn't mention it.

Laura, you are a disappointment.
First, it is now painfully obvious that although your husband is a genius, he had a political brain fart last week.
Now it appears that whatever affected him has now affected you as well. Keep it up, you will lose even more of your supporters.
Oh, and lay off the liberal refried beans, they make you temporarily stupid.

Taking issue with her commetns is now "trashing?" Thank you for proving my point. You mean you don't blindly trust Bush, who seems to be blindly trusting Harriet Miers? What kind of Bush-hating, sexist elitist Christian-hating commie are you? Go back to DU.
Just saving someone some time posting these intelligent aguements which will certainly follow....

Hey, folks! Before we all drink the Kool-Aid being prepared by the liberals, let's understand what was actually said here. I think is some cases, it could very well be that sexism is a reason for criticizing Harriet Miers' nomination.
On the other hand, maybe some of us just want some information first, before we decide whether we support her or not.

Laaura might just have well said, "Its a vast right wing Conservative agenda"...

This charge is silly. And I say that as someone who has been arguing on the side of Miers for days now. The fact is, most of Miers' conservative critics would love to see Priscilla Owen.
C'mon, Laura. Get with the program.
To: chris1
So now Meirs is like John Marshall? Or like Souter?? And that's the rub, we don't know?
GW's choice here may be one of his wisest decisions, but then again, it could be one of his worst!
To: TommyDale
The implication is pretty clear.
She's talking like a politician.
If she didn't mean to make the charge, she wouldn't have brought up the possibility.
Would someone have reason to be offended if I said "It's possible that he beats his wife?"

I can't believe the WH is treating conservatives who have real and legitimate questions concerning his nominee in this manner. I worked hard for this President in two elections, and now they are slinging mud at anyone who questions them from the right. How depressing!
To: Acts 2:38
Sexism, what a pants load. Conservatives wanted the choice to be from A-list judges -- Sam Alito, Janice Rogers Brown, Priscilla Owen, Michael Luttig, and Michael McConnell, to name a few.
That list has almost 50% women and all have better credentials than Ms Miers.

No, it's not. It's about whether Miers will rule as an originalist, not a conservative. Yes, there is a difference between the two: a conservative would jump at the first chance a case presented to ban abortion, while an originalist would refer said issue to the states. I disagree. Most conservatives view it as a states rights issue first, but would work to restrict abortions at the state level.

Wake up. It is NOT EVEN POSSIBLE that it is about sexism. Sheesh. Some 'conservatives' are turning to mush brains over this.

Then I suppose racism is possible in Bush's failure to nominate Janice Rogers Brown?
