Laura Bush says sexism possible in Miers criticism

COVINGTON, Louisiana (Reuters) - First lady Laura Bush joined her husband in defending his nominee to the U.S. Supreme Court on Tuesday and said it was possible some critics were being sexist in their opposition to Harriet Miers.

"That's possible, I think that's possible," Mrs. Bush said when asked on NBC's "Today Show" whether criticism that Miers lacked intellectual heft were sexist in nature. She said Miers' accomplishments as a lawyer were a role model to young women.

...

Mrs. Bush, who had publicly supported the nomination of a woman to the high court, noted that Miers had been president of the Texas Bar Association.

"I know Harriet well, I know how accomplished she is, I know how many times she's broken the glass ceiling herself. She is a role model for young women around our country," she said.

Hey, Howlin.

This is something like the Schiavo threads except for the acrimony. ;-)

This is the sort of question that the press has tricked people with for years, like "When did you stop beating your wife?" or "When did you stop hating Mexicans?" etc. There is never a correct answer.

True, but people will never remember that. It was the media who created the 'immanent threat' argument too for the Iraq War, which was never an argument that Bush made. But since Chenney let the interviewer frame the question, that arguement eventually got pegged to the Bush Administration. Laura was tricked, but her response will be flame bait that will be repeated and attributed to Laura in the coming weeks.

Sexism - Discriminatory or abusive behavior towards members of the opposite sex.

How do you support your statement that Laura Bush is checkmating the Dims? Accusing her own base of sexism even before the Dims do it is contempt.

The same thing would have been said about a man with her same lack of credentials for the Supremem Court. Sorry.

There is lots of room for a joke here, but I wouldn't want to be labeled "sexist". </sarcasm>

"It sounds as though President Bush is surrounded by women who advocate for affirmative action (Condi and, of course, Harriet Miers)."

And is Laura Bush "pro-choice" as well? And where did Mama Barbara Bush stand on abortion?

Well he did clerk for a Supreme Court justice, which is usually a sign that you have some legal talent. In particular, he clerked for Justice Robert Jackson, who was considered to be a heavyweight justice. Aside from that, don't you think concerns about Miers' political beliefs are at least somewhat justified. I mean she really is kind of a cipher and what is even more unusual is that she appears to have taken some pride in being a cipher.

No. We wanted a proven conserative, with qualifications in the vein of Thomas and Scalia who would rule similarily, as the president promised. We would prefer not to have to fight to get such a nominee, but if we HAD to fight, we were willing. It would have been worth it.

Clarence Thomas was worth the fight and Janice Rogers Brown would have been also.

I don't want to sidetrack the threat, but this is a petpeeve of mine. Hussein was an imminent threat at the time given that he was routinely firing missiles at our pilots. At least if you talked to our pilots operating in the no-fly zone, I am pretty sure they would consider missiles being fired at them to constitute an immiment threat.

I have no information on the issue. Do you have reason to believe that either Laura or Barbara Bush is pro-choice?

I can't believe how many middle of the road, comprimising, McCanininites have shown themselves break for the Dem talking points when us conservatives stand up.

Guess Mrs. Bush is now a comprimising McCaininite herself. She should make herself the 15th of the gang of 14. Bunch of give in Pubs.
