Miers's Lack of Judicial Experience Requires Questioning, Specter Says By GARY FIELDS Staff Reporter of THE WALL STREET JOURNAL October 10, 2005; Page A4

WASHINGTON -- White House counsel Harriet Miers's nomination to the Supreme Court hit more turbulence, as the head of the Senate panel considering her for the post questioned her qualifications and all but ruled out the quick confirmation sought by President Bush.

Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Arlen Specter (R., Pa.) said that while Ms. Miers might make an outstanding justice if given the chance, her lack of judicial experience requires that she be closely questioned about her views on settled law.

Ms. Miers is "intelligent, she's hard-working, unquestioned integrity," Mr. Specter said on ABC's "This Week." "But when you deal in constitutional law, you're dealing in some very esoteric complicated subjects that require a great deal of background. And that kind of background doesn't come unless you are in the field or unless you're really studying it."

Mr. Bush, meanwhile, used his weekly radio address Saturday to press the nomination, saying Ms. Miers, a former corporate lawyer and one of his longtime advisers, has broad experience in the courtroom and at the highest levels of government.

While I am very skeptical of the Miers' nomination, this type of condescension is outrageous.

Good thing W supported Specter in the primary against Toomey, it's nice to have a friend on the Judiciary Committee... Heh.

Toomey lost to this guy because the RNC and the white house threw their support behind specter.

If you remember the 'logic' at the time, defended by some people here (and you know who you are), the white house had to help specter in the primary so they could count on his support in the judiciary committee.

Now, however, they are citing the fact that specter is on the judiciary committee as the reason the president can't nominate a proven originalist to the supreme court.

Of course, detecting logical contradictions are not the strong suit of certain people.

Here is another lesson to the conservative base that we should NEVER fall for the election season gimmicks.

That's because I just added the story to the site and it was fresh on my mind... ;)

I remember on a previous thread - maybe it was the pukin dog "I'm back from my 3 day semi-exile" vanity - that it was OUR fault that we kept letting RINOs get elected.

Like hell it is. It's the party that has been trying keep these RINOs in office!

I know. Don't blame me. I voted for Toomey.

By the way, Ann Coulter also urged voting for Toomey in those days, and yet I do not remember any bashing taking place then.

All I can say is that Wednesday will be fascinating or sickening, depending on your point of view and sense of humor.

This type of attitude has given us Roe v Wade and Kelo v New London. This ain't rocket science, folks.

Sounds like this jerk would have voted against Rhenquist. He'd never been a lower court judge either. Specter is such a hypocrite and liar.

Pat Toomey lost to Specter because Specter was the President's man in Pennsylvania.
