Candidates for Virginia governor clash in TV debate
Minneapolis Star/Tribune (aka The Red Star) ^ | 10/10/05 | AP

The two major-party candidates for Virginia governor clashed on the death penalty and taxes during a televised debate Sunday night that included several rancorous exchanges.

Republican Jerry Kilgore, the former state attorney general, insisted that Democratic Lt. Gov. Tim Kaine could not be trusted to enforce the death penalty and to not raise taxes.

Kaine, who is Roman Catholic, said his religious objections to capital punishment would not affect his decisions on the issue. He did not promise not to raise taxes and suggested Kilgore's demand for a voter referendum on all tax increase proposals showed poor leadership.

"You've got to have backbone to lead if you want to be governor,'' Kaine said.

This is what the AP had to saw about last night's gubernatorial debate. The Richmond Times-Dispatch was a little more dispassionate in their coverage.

Kilgore's website claim he won the debate. I'm sure Kaine's does as well.

I hope CSPAN runs it sometime this week. I wanna see it.

Did anyone (especially all you Virginia Freepers) see this debate? What did you think?

Opinions anyone?

Corin-
You might want to ping the usual suspects.

I did not see the debate (family issues going on) so I can't comment.

He's toast. How can you be expected to enforce the death penalty if you object to it on religious grounds?

"You've got to have backbone to lead if you want to be governor,'' Kaine said.

Practically an admission that he plans to increase taxes.

One thing the AP fails to point out (why am I surprised?) is that when Kaine was mayor of Richmond, Richmond operated under a city manager form of government. He is Lt. Gov, which is a figurehead job and has absolutely no real power.

Based on elected experience, Kaine is sorely lacking. None of his offices have wielded any actual power, authority or responsibility.

You picked up on that, did you?
He'll raise taxes just as sure as I'm sitting in this chair.

Part of that record, he said repeatedly, included presiding over the state's second-worst performing schools as Richmond mayor.

"Jerry, you disrespect the hardworking parents and children in the Richmond school system,'' Kaine shot back. "You really owe them an apology.''

He still didn't address the issue of the poorly performing schools. Hardworking parents and children nothwithstanding, the Richmond city schools continue to be an embarrassment.

The last thing Virginia needs is a carptbagger Liberal from Kansas as our Governor. He keeps going on and on about his time in Honduras...and that's what he treats us like....a third world country.

I watched back and forth from Redskins game. Kilgore would be a terrific Governor, however, his deep SW Va accent and his delivery in general have always needed work. He did very well against Kaine and I would honestly have to say that he did indeed win. Our "friends" in Northern Va will see it differently. Kilgore used the old Reagan come back of "there he goes again" when dealing with Kaine's attempt to paint him in a corner on diversity issues, education money etc. Kaine repeated use of the word "diversity" put him into a very liberal corner. Any conservative should shutter at even the mere mention of this word. Diversity=Exclusion.

I wonder what that idiot Mac Watson will have to say about the debate. Sheesh, I really dread listening to his drivel.

I used to work at WRVA prior to Mac Watson in the afternoons and as fair as I try to be, I can't take it.

Better be careful, we had a mayor who went on and on about the homeless so much it actually increased under his leadership. I think he wanted us all to be homeless.

Heh....go to Jerry's website and watch the "Not Terry" ad and you'll see just how far Jerry's accent has come.

Because you swear to uphold the laws of the commonwealth?
