Under the guise of "warning" visitors about a change in Florida law, a gun-control group is needlessly and fraudulently scaring tourists.
The leafleting by the national (James) Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence is nothing more than a political ploy.
The group doesn't like Florida's so-called "stand your ground" law, which allows people to use force in self-defense without first attempting to retreat from a threatening situation. The Brady Campaign calls it the "Shoot First" law in its leaflets.
The group is entitled to its opinion. But it is dirty politics to imply that visitors' safety is at risk because of the law.
The leaflets, which have been distributed at airports in Miami and Orlando, proclaim "An Important Notice to Florida Visitors" in red type and advise people not to "argue unnecessarily with local people" and not to "shout or make threatening gestures" if someone seems angry with them.
In criticizing the law, Brady Campaign spokesman Peter Hamm said, "It could cause the most aggressive people in society to overreact."
It looks more like members of the Brady Campaign are the ones overreacting.
Fact of the matter is that after CCW passed in Florida, there were documented instances of bad guys *targeting* tourists and identifying them by the distinctive license plates on their rental cars.
Sure a few conservative web sites etc. will call them on it but for the most part they are allowed free run.
And as such, the rental companies have made their cars much less distinctive.
Yes, all those backwater rednecks in Florida are running around shooting people over disagreements over parking places at the Waffle house.... /sarcasm
I think that Florida's main problems are its high robbery and homicide rates. There was some economic study that estimated that for every foreign tourist who gets "victimized," Florida suffers a drop in tourist revenues. If you get too many such incidents in a row, and involving tourists from developed countries, revenue takes a dive. That's just how it works. These scare tactics wouldn't work on tourists if Florida didn't have a crime problem to begin with.
Let's also not forget the fact that Florida has a huge pedophile problem as well.
Anti-gun moonbats just don't get it!
An Armed Citizen ~ Is A Safe Citizen!
If they have to be advised not to behave like this, maybe they should stay home.
What I don't like is that this statute was unnecessary because it was already the law here in Florida anyway under the existing case law, but now the enactment of the statute has made this an issue. It just goes to show you that the people who run the legislature do not have a clue what they are doing. They are doing far more damage than good.
And the sad thing is this is about the only way citizens of IL will ever be able to carry.
I'd like to see those "Anti-self defense" morons come to Arizona and spend a night on the border where it is a certified war zone. CC hell. We carry 'em on our hip south of I-10.
The only two personaly known cases of reckless gun wielding at tourists in Florida I heard were done by crazed cops.
One case was my brother in law laughing with his son about some movie at the airport, the security guard thought they were making fun of him and not cooperating and pulled the gun on them at Miami airport.
The other case is a friend of mine getting stopped on the highway out of Miami and not understanding the language well, the black cop pulling a gun out and cussing in spanish...which my friend no Cuban could not understand either...except for the gun, of course, which made him let the cops do the searching for him...
So the Bradybill bunch is only a bunch of lawyers intent on using LE to intimidate people and let them be robbed and hurt and be processed by the system to be funded. That is it, a pure racket tax to lawyers and courts system.
Gun control is one of those hot political issues that the truth just can't support, so its advocates heve given up on the truth and can only hope to scare people with lies.
To which I will add: An armed society is a polite society!
I wish someone would remind California residents and visitors to mind their manners.
That's cool, except some of we old curmudgeon's are not too polite. ;)
That is very true. I find that my patience with idiots grows shorter with age. I have not much patience left.
Especially with politicians.

Don't you misfire
Fill me up
With the desire
To carry on
Don't you know honey
That love's a game
It's always a hit or miss
So take your aim
Got to hold on tight
Shoot me out of sight
Don't you misfire
Fill me up
With the desire
To carry on
Your gun is loaded
And pointing my way
There's only one bullet
So don't delay
Got to time it right
Fire me through the night
Come on take a shot
Fire me higher
Don't you miss this time
Please don't
Misfire ...
Misfire ...
