Moscow's multipolar mirage
United Press International ^ | October 10, 2005 | Mark N. Katz

WASHINGTON -- One of Russia's leading geopolitical thinkers, Aleksandr Dugin, outlined his vision of a "multipolar" world in a speech in Washington, D.C. on October 5. Dugin advocates the creation of a multipolar world as a means of resisting what he sees as American "unipolarism" as well as American-sponsored globalization. Understanding Dugin's ideas is important because they have gained an important following not just in Russia, but in the Kremlin itself. But while Russians are increasingly attracted to these ideas, they are deeply flawed.

Speaking at the Johns Hopkins University's School of Advanced International Studies, Dugin outlined his multipolar vision. He sees America as attempting not just to extend its power, but also its values and civilization to the rest of the world. Dugin said that while he did not reject those values per se, he -- and others like him --reject them as universal values. There are other systems of values, and a multipolar world must be created to protect them against America and its values.

But according to Dugin, no single nation besides the United States can afford to be a polar power. Hence, a bipolar world -- as during the Cold War -- is no longer possible. Other nations wishing to resist American unipolarism, then, must do so in conjunction with others on a transnational basis.

Dugin sees the European Union as an example of the successful creation of a transnational pole. In his vision, there can be two more such poles. One would be an Asia/Pacific one based on collaboration between China and Japan. The fourth pole would be a Eurasian one based on the collaboration not just of most of the former Soviet states, but also with Pakistan, Iran, and perhaps even Turkey.

America, Dugin claims, is building its own empire. Russia should respond by creating a Eurasian empire.

America's globalization is confederate and inherently multipolar.

It is the Eurasian imperialism and Sino-Soviet dictatorial agreements on the world which are unipolar.

Once again cryptocommunists are able to invert perceptions.

They are not unique here: the 'Old Europe' is the proponent of the same views.

OK - first, gyorgi, We are the Good Guys. Now explain again why there is a need for opposition poles in the world?

Fat chance of that happening! Japan & India, perhaps. But it's looking more like a triumverate of Japan, India & the US.

Once again cryptocommunists are able to invert perceptions. How do they do that? It is amazing the way they can twist words to mean whatever they want them to mean. Instinctively. It's like some sort of genetic talent they have. While conservatives spend time constructing sound arguments, they demolish them without effort, seemingly by slipping in a new meaning for a word or two. Then us slow-witted conservatives have to painstakingly sift through their statements to find the fallacy.

It is the Eurasian imperialism and Sino-Soviet dictatorial agreements on the world which are unipolar.

Any agreements/coalitions are by definition multipolar.

If you think about it, the multipolarism is at the foundation of the American constitutional system: federal structure, division of powers, checks and balances.

If USA becomes the dominating world power, will the republican system of America survives such concentration of imperial power? If the example of ancient Romes teaches us anything, it is not possible.

For the same reason why there is a need for more than one party, for federalism, for the division of power for checks and balances. To prevent the great concentration of power in few hands.

The term triumvirate was applied to "the unofficial political alliance of Gaius Julius Caesar, Marcus Licinius Crassus, and Gnaeus Pompeius Magnus". See more at First Triumvirate

I read the bible and have found prophecy about the "end times" extremely accurate. Since 2000, I have held the belief that Russia and Europe will be the "beast" as described in Revelations 17. The scripture talks about the prostitute that rides on top of the beast and that the kings of the earth lend their power for one hour with their only thought to destroy the prostitute. The prostitute sounds like either the USA or the Roman Catholic church, I am not sure.

RE: Russia should respond by creating a Eurasian empire.

Dugin has something in common with Hitler ... a few things in fact. He subscribes to paganism and has admitted to being influenced by National Bolshevik tracts. He has not denounced anti Semitism. Etc. If the Shanghai Cooperation Organization ends up following this prescription, the resulting war will be like WW2 times 100 in all respects. And I do mean all, including several billion dead.

I would imagine a more likely scenario to be the Shanghai Cooperation Organization as the Axis. Those countries of Old Europe who have naively, for the past couple decades, thought they knew better than the US and UK, and thought they could commune with The East in peace, will wish they had not been so naive. Western Europe will be enslaved in a manner never previously known. The years 300 - 500AD will look like a picnic compared to what is in store.

RE: Russia should respond by creating a Eurasian empire.

According to Orwell, after the fall of Soviet block (yes, after!) Europe and Russia are to merge into Eurasia. China is to merge with Korea and Japanetc into Eastasia and USA is to merge with Canada, Latin America , England, Australia and New Zealand into Oceania.

The rest will be the theater for the proxy wars.

The SCO combines the Yellow with much of the Red plus a smidgeon of the grey. The blue is much smaller than this due to increasing hatred of the US in the Americas - unless there is a reversal and a Reaganesque policy is set forth, the Americas look grim. Also, in reality, the Yellow now must include many portions of the grey area in Africa.

The SCO combines the Yellow with much of the Red plus a smidgeon of the grey.

Orwell thought about final and natural point of equilibrium. He has seen three centers of gravity. Control of see routes resulting in Oceania, wast land space resulting in Eurasia and dense large populations resulting in Eastasia. So according to this scheme the alliance between Russia and China is temporary, Russia will join Europe in the end.

The blue is much smaller than this due to increasing hatred of the US in the Americas - unless there is a reversal and a Reaganesque policy is set forth, the Americas look grim.

The reverse is more like, more "socialism". According to Orwell the winning system in Oceania will be Ingsoc (English Socialism). And if you think about what can unite Canada, Mexico, rest of Latin America with Oceania than perspective of socialism? Castro, Lula and Chavez are much more popular there than Milton Friedman.

It's a mistake to associate Mr. Dugin with Moscow. He has not an official position, just expresses his own point of view.

Though he's rather popular in certain circles.
