FReeper Canteen ~ Mission: Support Our Troops AARs ~ Oct. 10, 2005
Ziggy

Freeper Canteen
On A Mission:  AARs

Some you accepted the mission, to premeditatedly and purposefully honor at least one member of our armed services on or before October 7th...  Here are your stories....

Landry Fan:

I did it today!! I was so busy preparing for the Support the Troops & Their Families Weekend that I had to put off visiting the recruitment center.

I found out today there was [a recruiting center very close to] my apartment! Is that crazy or what! If I didn't know it was there I wouldn't have found it. I bought several boxes of cookies and a bag of candy and red and blue gift bows, and I wrote out a thank you card.

I hate to cook so I thought if I bought good cookies it would be almost the same thing. I consider not cooking for the troops my patriotic duty!

I called ahead to see if I'd be able to get in. They said just walk in. When I got there the location held different offices- Navy, Air Force, Army, and Coast Guard. They didn't mention Marines, so I don't know where the DC Marine office is.

I went in to the first room and spoke with a man in a Navy uniform. The man at the other desk wore a brown uniform. They asked what it was for and I told them. They said they were surprised and that people don't drop off treats at recruiting centers. I said my friends do!

I thanked them for their service and made them promise to share with the guys in the army office. The army guys looked like they were interviewing someone so I didn't go in but left them with the Navy. I gave boxes of cookies to the CG and the Air Force guys.

I told him I was with a group (FR) that enjoys thanking and helping our military. I told him that since I read about protests at the recruiting centers and they made me mad, I wanted to drop off something nice. He said it's because of the military that the protesters can do what they do. Then he said not to worry about it because they (the recruitment guys) don't. I hope that is true.

DivaBetsyRoss:

I took you up on your challenge from the other week. What a great idea you had. I wanted to go in to the recruiting office with my children, but I just couldn't find the time-so what I did was order Pizza from Pizza Hut to be delivered to our local Army recruiting office at lunch time. I called the recruiting office about 10:00 and I told the gentleman who answered the phone that lunch was on me as a way to say thanks for all of the hard work they put in for our country-I just needed to know how many were in the office and what kind of pizza and soda they liked from Pizza Hut. I think they were a bit surprised and I know they liked the Pizza. (I had to call the same office a while ago and when I gave my name they recognized me as the pizza lady!!) He he. I actually got the idea from a Freeper awhile ago and I have ordered pizza for them a few times now. Your challenge reminded me to get up off my patute and do it again! I love the idea because it is easy for anyone to do, it is cost effective AND it is safe for our good guys- since the food and drink is being delivered by a reputable business they don't have to worry. It made me feel good to know that I could have delivered a small but satisfying gesture to our heroes while they were on the job! I mean who doesn't like free pizza, wings and soda for lunch?? thanks for the reminder and I hope some other people will follow your lead!

So here's your challenge for life:  keep it up!  Figure out a schedule that works for you and do something like this on a regular basis!!  Once a month, once a quarter, to commemorate a special occasion -- whatever works for you!  Just do it!  *HUGS!*

I know there are some more of you out there who took up the challenge... PLEASE share your stories with us on the thread!  Thanks!!

(P.S. We will get back to Military Short Speak next week, but I
thought this was important and I hope you do too!!)
