Council members balk at Nagin's casino plans

Mayor Ray Nagin's plan to shock the economy back to life by expanding gambling in a large part of the CBD was a shellshock to many of his colleagues.

Nagin proposed allowing the city's largest hotels in a boundary between Poydras and Canal Streets from Claiborne Avenue to the river, to become full-fledged casinos.

Nagin has admitted that his idea would be controversial, but he said he thought it could jump start the economy.

"I'm out on a limb right now,” he said. “I didn't want any of my friends around me because this is usually controversial and I don't want them taking the hits. I'm going to take the hits on this one and see if we're ready to move forward."

I somehow can not imagine "NOLA" and "honest gaming" in the same sentence, except in a joke.

Lemme sea mister mayer. I go steal a tv, sell it to a pimp, hire my wife out as a whore, I git the ca$h, and eye go to the caseano and shoot my wad.

Series, this a$$hole is the epitome of a moron.

In the businesses I've run, I wouldn't let this dolt refill the paper towel dispenser in the men's room. And the "governor" is a mindless twit who couldn't make a flippin decision after being told by the President of the United States to E-friggin-E-VAC-U-ATE.

*shaking head / rolling eyes*

Can anyone image these two people leading a platoon of Marines into battle? Or running a business? Or... well, the answer is obvious.

They are, as El Rushbo would say, "They Are Stuck on Stoopid."

Jump start the corruption so that he can line his own pockets and buy fancy houses while the citizens live in shacks. When is someone going to get this lying thief out of office and appoint a decent leader for this community to come home too? He is so desperate for money since people caught on to the "fake-cops-on-the-payroll" scam. Bet that POS misses that money.

"It just doesn't seem like it's the right solution for our city,” added Councilman Jay Batt. “I think we could really hurt our character of our city, our culture. The things that attract people to our city, we may damage that by trying to jumpstart the economy very quickly but maybe irresponsibly."

Nagin isn't a responsible person so his "solution" isn't a surprise.

You said pretty much what I was thinking. Opening these casinos gives more opportunity got graft, corruption and payoffs.

Wouldn't the EXISTING casino owners be a trifle miffed by this play?

Try a stunt like that in Vegas, you wind up "out in the corn" someplace.

With his family in Dallas, hiz honor seems to be getting more quality pipe time in and needs the graft from the casino's to support his habit.

It is brought up in the second to last paragraph. I don't think Harrah's is going to like the idea either....

Nagin's other opposition could be the current gaming industry in the city. As of now, Harrah's entertainment is the only company allowed to operate a land-based casino here. So the city would have to go back to the negotiating table with them as well.

Just curious, will Ray Nagin be CEO, President, manager or official of any of the casinos, or have his finger in the pie in some capacity, if he gets them for NO?

Of course Nagin wouldn't benefit or line his pockets in any way.
