Miers attends church services in Texas [Episcopal? I thought she was evangelical?]

Supreme Court nominee Harriet Miers, accompanied by her brother and other members of her family, attended services at an Episcopal church near downtown Dallas on Sunday.

Miers smiled at reporters but did not stop to answer questions as she entered the Church of the Incarnation, which Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison, R-Texas, and other well-known state politicians attend.

When asked by a reporter if she was surprised by the conservative reaction to her nomination, Miers replied, "Nice to see you."

...For years, Miers was a member of Valley View Christian Church in Dallas, but she and about 150 of its 1,200 active members have left the church to form a separate congregation, according to Texas Supreme Court Justice Nathan Hecht. A friend of Miers, Hecht also is part of the breakaway group.

Valley View is part of a movement known as Christian Churches and Churches of Christ....As a child, Miers attended Roman Catholic and Protestant churches. In 1979, she was baptized at Valley View, and she later taught Sunday school classes there.

Did you read your own article: Miers smiled at reporters but did not stop to answer questions as she entered the Church of the Incarnation, which Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison, R-Texas, and other well-known state politicians attend.
It's not her church.

"[Episcopal? I thought she was evangelical?]"

"accompanied by her brother and other members of her family"

This ain't her church. Somebody in her family is a member there.

I think there was some kind of split in her evangelical church - I read she has been attending a variety of Episcopal churches while in Washington.

Why aren't they going to her church, instead of she going to their church? Maybe this is a conservative Episcopal church? Is there still such a thing?

I'm not a "moaner and groaner" I've been supportive of the Miers nomination. Partly because of her reported membership in an evangelical church. I'd like to see her take the press to that church, not an Episcopal one.

Come on, have a critical thought. Principle before party.

He promised us a known constructionist, now we've got a questionmark that has had numerous changes of heart in life, apparently.

Maybe they went to her church last month when she wasn't a Supreme Court nominee and didn't have the press in tow?

This is such a silly thing to get all worked up over.

Steyn says she is strong on the 2nd amendment and carries a gun. If true, that just might change my mind about her.

Miers on RKBA:

How does a free society prevent" such crimes, she asked. She then explained:

The same liberties that ensure a free society make the innocent vulnerable to those who prevent rights and privileges and commit senseless and cruel acts. Those precious liberties include free speech, freedom to assemble, freedom of liberties, access to public places, the right to bear arms and freedom from constant surveillance. We are not willing to sacrifice these rights because of the acts of maniacs.

Miers, however, rejected the notion that "precious liberties", including "the right to bear arms," should be sacrificed in the name of crime prevention. Quite obviously, she was referring to the "right to bear arms" as an individual right.

If Harriet Miers is confirmed, she will be the only evangelical on the U.S. Supreme Court. I think it is interesting and important to note the relative proportion of membership in various religious groups on the Supreme Court.
And that could be why some conservatives, consciencely or unconsciencely oppose her.
