If you talk to Arab or Muslim Americans, the stories of routine harassment by various authority figures - based on their names and appearance - are legion. As the public debate continues apace over how best to avoid London's fate, many here are beginning to wonder whether the same sense of alienation and disengagement on the part of young Muslims can really be avoided. ----------------------------------------------------------
Yes it is avoidable.
1) CAIR denounces Muslim terrorism
2) Leaders in Muslim communities denounce Muslim terrorism
3) People in communities report suspicious behavior
4) Hate mongers are expelled from mosques and reported
5) Money to Muslim charities is donated to causes in the US
Do these and maybe we will talk.

When Bloomberg said on WABC that "I think if we've learned anything, it is you can't predict what a terrorist looks like." That was good enough for me. Until then, I thought that the danger was coming in the form of radical Islamists, but now I know that I'm in just as much danger from 80 year-old church ladies and the infant children of NY WASPS.
I don't feel any safer, of course, but I do feel pretty damn noble!

Searches divide?
Not nearly as devisive as a bomb would be. Bombs tend to divide bodies. If they're "offended" , f'em.

they maintain that random searching is effective, and a good deterrent.Yep, when you make a LAW that PROHIBITS checking the people most likely to be terrorists (Middle Eastern males between the ages of 18 and 45), it just makes me feel soooo protected. (disgusted sarcasm off)

Random searches divide New York Only a liberal calls 99%-1% "divided".

The low-level nature of the genuinely random police checks may be reassuring. Not to our Founding Fathers.
Amendment IV
The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.
In 1791, everyone still remembered Tory loyalists (although many Tories were honorable and did move to Canada after saying they would leave the country.
Of course, racial profiling at that time would have targeted middle-aged white European males, as most of the dangerous Tories in these united States in 1791 fit the same profile as their potential victims.
Something I learned long ago: If you act paranoid enough, They will start coming after you.

The only significance I could think of is that October 9th is the day when landlords must begin providing heat to apartments.
Pretty soon, people will be wearing winter coats, so that terrorists can now go to donning concealed bomb vests.
Now what?

I went through NYC on Amtrak last week. The place is a $hithole freak show to say the least.
Too many scary people in too little space.
I would have carried if I knew how lax Amtrak security was beforehand.
