(CBS) This CBS News Poll finds an American public increasingly pessimistic about the economy, the war in Iraq, the overall direction of the country, and the president.
(Excerpt) Read more at cbsnews.com ...
A growing number of Americans want U.S. troops to leave Iraq as soon as possible, rather than stay the course, and the highest percentage ever thinks the United States should have stayed out of Iraq. When given a set of options for paying for rebuilding the hurricane-racked Gulf Coast, only one taking money from the Iraq War gets majority support.
President Bush's overall job approval rating has reached the lowest ever measured in this poll, and evaluations of his handling of Iraq, the economy and even his signature issue, terrorism, are also at all-time lows. More Americans than at any time since he took office think he does not share their priorities.
The public's concerns affect their view of the state of the country. Sixty-nine percent of Americans say things in the United States are pretty seriously off on the wrong track the highest number since CBS News started asking the question in 1983. Today, just 26 percent say things are going in the right direction.

What a hatchet job by CBS!!
Yawn. Guess he won't win in 2008.
They have a memo to prove it!
There was a typed memo about it.
Well, he had the ordinary second term slumps for a while but then he has gone and pissed off his own base with the Miers appointment. This isn't really a surprise.
I'd say he took a pretty bad hit with the conservative base this week. These numbers will rebound in the next couple of weeks.
GMTA
Gallup had his numbers going up 5% to 45% (which is still low).
Which one is right?
Why is it a hatchet job?
Considering the amount of disapproval around here of Bush, why should one feel the need to explain it away?
Do they do any Polls this often about what the public thinks of the major news media?
What do you want it is cbs. Asking them for an approval rating and not being communist is a waste.
Correction:
there was a typed memo about it.
Anyone look at the internals of this piece of crap? Let me guess, 75% of the respondents are Democrats. If someone has the time to look at the percentage of Democratic respondents in the internal numbers, if CBS even provided them, please post the result here. I will bet the percentage is well above the 37% of the voting population that is registered Democrat. If it's below 50% Democrat I'll eat my hat! Just like the AP poll with 52% Democrats, these polls are just quick, dirty and looking for a pre-determined result without weighting the data to match the actual population's demographics.
And as we all know, polls are accurate and mean everything!
NOT
Guess I know where to find that 37%....
Missed it by that much!
I see no reason to view this a a hatchet job.
When those winter fuel bills start coming in Bush will pay the price just as Jimmy Carter did. And it is mid-October so that is on people's minds.
Is this the same one that had a 57% democratic sampling?
Gallup had his numbers going up 5% to 45% (which is still low).

OK, folks, what would you like your poll on GWB to say today?? OK, then two questions and we average the values to get the answer....
1. What is your rating of GWB's job on terror? 100%
2. What is your rating of GWB's position on illegal Mexicans? 0%
OK, your answer is 50% for his approval rating....OK, what other polls do you need today, with what outcome??
Did Cronkite determine the wording of this poll,by chance?
