The Harriet Miers nomination has set off one of the most delightful psychodramas in recent Washington history. President Bush, the habitual iconoclast, shattered prevailing traditions and expectations by asking his former personal attorney and now-White House counsel to assume a seat on the U.S. Supreme Court.
Elites hate the nomination. Miers, in contrast to the polymath John Roberts, has little direct experience with constitutional law, and may know less about cases and precedents than such potential inquisitors as Sens. Joe Biden and Chuck Schumer. She hasn't spent time on the federal bench. She hasn't written sage articles for prestigious law reviews. She has little conventional pedigree and that drives the local elites nuts.
Conservative activists also count themselves unamused. Sen. George Allen told the Richmond Times-Dispatch that of the 100 phone calls his office got on the Meirs pick before noon last Monday, only three supported the president's pick.
Many conservatives wanted the president to duke it out with Senate Democrats by selecting a known and documented constitutional originalist Judges Michael Luttig, Michael McConnell, Edith Jones and Janice Rogers Brown topped many wish lists. The president, the thinking went, not only could have established himself as the King of Capitol Hill, he also could have killed the recent Democratic tactic of slurring and smearing conservative judicial picks.

The best possible nominee is relative.
Our choice of the best possible nominee would not stand a chance of getting confirmed because of the wishy washy Republican senators.
The best possible nominee is the one that has the philosophy and character we want AND can get confirmed.
Bush says she is a strict constructionist. I believe him. He says she will not change. I believe him. She can get confirmed. The is, therefore, the best nominee IMHO.
I'm having trouble reconciling the "we don't know anything about her" line of argument with the "they are pleased" line. What do they know that we don't?
Yep, the rest of his judicial picks have been so bad, this is just another in a long line failed opportunities. Right?
LOL.
"The name is 'Jackington.'"
Yes....... my cats are afraid of her picture. ;-)
And only a few women with black hair look good wearing red lipstick otherwise it's too harsh looking. Harriet is fortunate, she has the kind of face that only requires a hint of make up as a compliment not as a distraction.
Yes........... I like the woman, but she could use a professional to help her.
****
Months ago a few of us here on FR suggested on a few threads vehemently that Condi Rice change her hair style. It was TOO RIGID and the flip in the back was from the 60's and looked like the Liberty Bell. She must have read the love here and the occasional suggestion to change...... because she HAS changed her hair style, and it is great. She looks wonderful!
LOL!! :)
Where did everyone go? :)
What is your evidence that Miers will not be a conservative justice on the court?
What about her resume is not conservative? It seems very conservative to me.
Thanks for the ping!
That is a superb analysis, probably more filled with facts than any of Miers opponents' pieces.
I'm still comfortable with my original, "I bet the President knows her well enough" attitude on this nomination. I'm looking forward to reading and hearing more at the hearings.
I hope they are scheduled very soon.
I don't believe I said that she would not be. God alone knows what Miers would be like as a Supreme Court justice. Which is exactly my point: no one knows what she will be like, but a lot of people are jumping in and defending Bush as brilliant--the bushbots.
Yep, the rest of his judicial picks have been so bad, this is just another in a long line failed opportunities. Right?
I made no reference to the success or failure of Bush's nominees. My only point was this: that some people overrate George W. Bush and others underrate him.
and a Bush bashbot reaction....
Who bashed Bush?
It appears to me that those who are writing dissenting posts to me are arguing against points I didn't make and condemning things I did not say.
Too bad he can't lead any of those spineless RINOs in the Senate; then maybe he wouldn't have had to "go stealth" and could have avoided this whole hullabaloo.
God alone knows what Miers would be like as a Supreme Court justice.
Wrong. Bush knows at least as much as any mrotal could, and it's his opinion that's important.
Who bashed Bush?
I believe most people would agree that to say a person is generally overestimated by his constituents is a bash.
