EAST CHICAGO A bomb explosion on Cline Avenue near Interstate 94 rocked the area Wednesday night and tied up traffic for hours.
No injuries from the blast were reported.
Police were notified of a possible bomb in the back of a car about 7:45 p.m. at Cline Avenue north of Columbus Avenue.
Authorities cleared the expressway and the surrounding area before attempting to detonate the device about 9 p.m.
Lake County police were still gathering information late Wednesday.
Police spokesman Mike Higgins said East Chicago police received a call about a domestic disturbance involving a weapon.
During a traffic stop related to that call, police found a man and a severely beaten woman inside a car. The woman told police there was a bomb in the vehicle.
Higgins said police took the man into custody and requested assistance from the Lake and Porter County Bomb Squad.
Traffic on Cline Avenue and Interstate 94 was stopped. Traffic remained backed up after 10:30 p.m.
Bomb squad officers sent a robot to retrieve the package. When they attempted to open the package, an explosion occurred inside the vehicle.
Sheriff Roy Dominguez said three explosive devices were detonated by police.
Federal investigators with the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives were requested.
Names of the suspect and other details were not available at press time.
Its a burnt shell, Lt. Chris Eckert, commander of the bomb squad, said of the car. Were not touching it until the ATF arrives.
The location of the vehicle was at the exit for Columbus Drive and Chicago Avenue within sight of the Trump and Majestic Star casino boats.

CHICAGO -- A domestic dispute Wednesday night led to a car explosion in East Chicago, Ind.
Police arrested a man for allegedly beating up his girlfriend near a car on Cline Avenue.
While in custody, the man told officers there was an explosive in the car.
The bomb squad arrived and used a robot to detonate the bomb.
"You heard a couple of boom booms and then one big boom," witness Carolyn Cobb said. "It was just a terrible sight to see."
The woman was taken to the hospital with minor injuries.
How long till this is swept under the rug?
Nothing on FOXNews.com or MSNBC.com. They're still downplaying the NYC subway threat. Why do they cover the threats so much and ignore the actual incidents? Hmmmmm.....
Severely beaten woman=minor injuries? What....?
Or perhaps a terrorist boyfriend who she decided she didn't want to see kill innocent people. She tried to stop him, so he beat her up to shut her up. I'm getting really scared about tomorrow and this weekend, what with the NYC subway threat. I'm afraid there's going to be bombings in a bunch of major cities.
Nothing to see here. Move along, move along...
Sheez! That article leaves more questions than answers, doesn't it!?
Bingo..
Man, why dies this stuff have to happen so late at night?
dies=does
I'll check in "tomorrow", I guess. Spell check don't help when it's spelled right.
You mean like the plane that crashed in Queens right after 9/11? And that kid in Oklahoma City? And the highway shootings(snipers)? Unless this leads to something bigger or something bad goes down this weekend, we'll never hear about this again.
heh! I didn't even notice! Guess I am getting sleepy too. :)
"Sheez! That article leaves more questions than answers, doesn't it!?"............surprised???
Ping-a-ling.
This happened at 11am yesterday morning? I didn't hear of it and I'm in Chicago. This was posted near the bottom of the news section on nbc5's website.
Local news led off with a teens's murder, cta raising fares and the white sox.
No mention of three explosion on a major expressway at all, inexcusable. Who was this guy? Where did he get these bombs from? Are ATF or FBI investigating?
