RACINE, Wis. - Police officers may soon be asking students to color in images of handguns to teach them about gun safety.
The Racine Police Department got approval from the City Council on Tuesday night to use coloring books donated by the National Rifle Association at schools.
Supporters say the books, which feature the character Eddie Eagle, will help teach children responsibility. But opponents, including Racine Alderman Pete Karas, argue the books won't provide enough training to keep children safe.
"I just don't think (it's helpful) at all to be handing out sheets of paper to do what's a fun activity and they are coloring a handgun," Karas told the council, which voted 8-7 to approve the books.
The council also voted to create a citizens group to examine ways officers could teach children about guns beyond using the coloring books.
Jayne Siler told the council she wants her children to learn outside of the home about the dangers of guns.
"There will come a day when more people will carry guns with them" into malls and onto the streets, Siler said.
Hoplophobes? Interesting word. I think it's true. So many kids around WI have a positive view of guns. That's the last place where kids need an education about guns. Most kids can't wait to go hunting at age 12. It is a milestone just like getting a driving license at 16.
The thing with the coloring books in Racine might be just that the City Council was so cheap in getting something for free, that they didn't know the coloring books came from the NRA. LOL It might have been a sneaky way for the NRA to spread propaganda or get some free publicity.
Yer a nut !........:o)
This is why it's important for freedom-loving individuals to run for and get elected to their local school boards. You can make a difference, if you don't leave the operation of the schools to the leftists by default.
NRA ~ Bump!
BTTT
Cool. I got the Eddie Eagle stuff when my son was about 5, and taught him the "don't touch, tell an adult" program. He came running in from the back yard, with his buddy, some months later: "Dad! We found a real gun in the back yard, but we didn't touch it!"
Yipes!
Turns out, it was a 3/4ths buried silver plastic toy six-shooter buried in the clay, probably lost by the son of the previous owner of the house. But my son and his buddy sure thought it was real, and they did the right thing.
I'm a real believer in the Eddie Eagle program, because of that event.
"There will come a day when more people will carry guns with them" into malls and onto the streets, Siler said.
God willing and the crick don't rise...
The City of Racine has often been referred to as Madison South, but the outlying county is becoming increasingly Republican. Some hunters down here, but not as much as more northern areas. We have a fairly large, and growing, inner city and gun violence problem.
This was a hotly debated item...the lefties knew it was an NRA coloring book, were completely livid to the point of organizing protests and taking to the streets. You have no idea what a significant, though seemingly small, victory this is in our neck of the woods. And yes, I do believe I heard a squealing sound coming from the skies the other day! lol
We're a county of about 200,000 stuck between Milwaukee and Kenosha, and despite massive voter fraud in SE Wisconsin, we were able to carry our county for Bush by more than 4 points!
Sorry for the long story, but it's very exciting to live in an area that has historically been a liberal bastian and see what a difference activism and a few well-placed conservative elected officials can make! YEEHAAA!
BTW, Jayne Siler is also a friend and I believe this article has taken some quotes out of context to make the intent ambiguous- she spoke out publicly in favor of the coloring books.
I so much agree with participating in stuff like the school board, etc, and becoming active instead of just griping about it. I went so far as to get elected as a labor union leader so I could get my voice heard. I want to have a say in how my life is run. Very good point.

Have you seen this? Wonder what your comments are? Sensationalism?
Thanks. I should have known you'd already be on top of that. :-)
He said "granddad left one of his guns out".
Much to her embarrassment it was her BB gun hidden behind a clothes hamper after she had been shooting at starlings.
His parents had taught him well.
Heh, that's a good one.
