Blackwell the Only GOP Winner in Zogby Poll
The Blackwell campaign | 10/5/5 | The Blackwell campaign

Posted on 10/05/2005 8:07:07 PM PDT by NeoCaveman

(COLUMBUS, October 5, 2005) Complete results of the October 3 Wall Street Journal Online Zogby Interactive Poll show Ohio Secretary of State Ken Blackwell is the only GOP candidate winning head-to-head match-ups against the two leading Democrat challengers. While Blackwell beat Rep. Ted Strickland and Columbus Mayor Michael Coleman, Republican challengers Auditor Betty Montgomery and Attorney General Jim Petro lost similar head to head match-ups by wide margins.

Blackwell beat both Coleman (44.4% to 43%) and Strickland (44.5% to 43.4%). Petro lost to Coleman 41% to 36.6% (loss of 4.4%) and Strickland 41.7% to 35.3% (loss of 6.4%). Montgomery lost to Coleman 42.5% to 34.2% (loss of 8.3) and Strickland 44.2% to 33.2% (loss of 11%).

In another sign of strength, Blackwell earned his lead over Strickland since the last Zogby poll in August, when the two were locked in a 43%-43% dead heat. "We have the candidate with the momentum to win in spite of a difficult climate for Republicans," said campaign manager Mike Hernon, "which is a real boost to Republicans who want a winner in the Statehouse in 2006."

"As this poll clearly shows, Ken's independence has given him a Teflon' coating with Ohio voters on ethics scandals caused by other officeholders," added Hernon. "The Secretary's independence is also attracting culturally conservative Democrat and Independent voters, just like the original "Teflon" candidate, Ronald Reagan."

"Ken is one leader the people still trust," concluded Hernon.

The Zogby poll was conducted Sept. 16-21 and covered 1,300 Ohio general election voters. Zogby Interactive was the only major polling organization to predict the dead heat between candidates Al Gore and George Bush in the 2000 election.

The complete text of the Zogby Report follows below.

Wall Street Journal Online October 3, 2005

Battleground States Poll Gubernatorial: Ohio

Republican Gov. Bob Taft's time is up due to term limits, and Democrats hope the investment scandal that engulfed him this year will mar his party's hopes to hold the seat. According to Zogby, the Democrats have two strong candidates in Columbus Mayor Michael Coleman elected in 2000 as the city's first African-American mayor and Congressman Ted Strickland.

Secretary of State Ken Blackwell who oversaw the state's extremely close presidential race in 2004 seems to be the strongest Republican candidate, according to Zogby Interactive. Mr. Blackwell continued to show tight margins in the mid-September poll, clocking in up one percentage point on Mr. Coleman and up two against Rep. Strickland.

If Mr. Blackwell were to drop out or lose in the primary to the Republican polling in second place, Attorney General Jim Petro, Mr. Petro would trail Rep. Strickland. (emphasis added)

Normally do not trust Zogby, but this time I think he is right. Blackwell is about the only one not tainted by the current disastrous administration of the state.

He's looking good!

Is he also leading in the primary poll against Petro and Montgomery?

When it comes down to it, if Blackwell gets the nomination I think he'll get 52-55% of the vote in the general.

He's leading in all polls against Betty and Jim, by varying margins. There seem to be atleast 30% undecided.

I love that we can now tell "pragmatists" that Ken is also the pragmatic choice.

Our current Republican govenor has an apporval rating of 15%.

For any GOP nominee to not be DOA is indeed a good sign. The other two GOP candidates are both trailing to the Democrat.

Considering that he does NOT have the support of the state GOP bigwigs...and Shaft...er...Taft has been such a disaster...that's pretty much a landslide.

The Establishment (RINOs) froze him out and he's a stronger candidate because of it.
Go, Ken, Go!

Ohio is screwed. We are going to have a democrat governor next time around because of two things:

1) corruption in the current administration (bob taft)

2) republicans in ohio are turned off by the consistent unconservative RINOs weve been getting.

Also, don't be suprised if ......... get ready for this.... Jerry Springer runs for Governor of Ohio.

Blackwell will be Governor.
Dems take over the legislature.
He'll get Cuyahoga County.

You lost your credibility with that one.

Therfor I will not refute your points one and two. They are addressed in the article.

Why in the hell did those goofball ClearChannel stations drop Glen Beck and put Springer on the air then, knowing full well their ratings will plummet. The only thing I can think of is that the DNC is actually subsidizing Springers airtime in plans for him to run for Governor.

I do not know

Your tin foil is showing. There are already 2 Democrats running for governor and both are stronger than Springer....although Coleman did destroy himself on the Glen Beck show. If Springer were to run, he's floated that trial balloon before, it would be for Senate where no one for real is taking on the weakend Mike DeWine.

Poll ping. I know it is Zogby, but it's the only poll I've seen that pits the Repubs vs. the Dems.

The conculsion: Blackwell is the only electable Republican, the fact that he is the most conservative one too makes me happy.
