NORMAN - The FBI has found no evidence so far that a University of Oklahoma student who died in a bombing Saturday night tried to get inside the football stadium or had ties to any terrorist organization, officials said Tuesday.
The FBI also has found no evidence anyone else was involved, officials said. Still, OU plans to tighten security at upcoming football games. Fans can expect bags and purses to be checked more closely.
“They should come a little earlier,” OU President David Boren said. “Be patient with us - know it’s only for their safety that we’re being very, very thorough.”
Fans also will not be allowed to leave at the half on passes and return.
Joel “Joe” Henry Hinrichs III is believed to have died in an explosion about 7:30 p.m. Saturday on a campus bench about 100 yards from the packed Gaylord Family - Oklahoma Memorial Stadium. Investigators are treating the death as a suicide.
OU was playing Kansas State before more than 80,000 fans. The game was in the second quarter. The blast could be heard inside the stadium.
Explosives later were removed from the student’s university-owned apartment.
The FBI continues to investigate. One agent re-interviewed the student’s father Tuesday in Colorado Springs, Colo.
Hinrichs, 21, was a junior majoring in engineering. He has been described by his family and the university as a loner with emotional difficulties. He dropped out in 2003-2004 but returned.
The FBI has reviewed surveillance tapes, interviewed acquaintances and checked Hinrichs’ purchases.
The FBI also looked at possible ties to Islamic groups after learning Hinrichs’ roommate is from Pakistan, attended a nearby mosque and worked for the OU athletics department, The Oklahoman has learned.
That will come as a large surprise to the fertilizer salesman.

Don't know if this has been mentioned, but on Channel 6 this morning, apparently there was an off duty officer in the fertilizer store at the time of this purchase request who was concerned enough about it to get this guy's tag number.

That's how I wrote it. The fictional sniper used an SKS to loft his bullets over the near side of the stadium and into the opposite upper deck from 1000 yards away, beyond the immediate police perimeter. In this fictional case, the sniper was not suicidal. A suicide bomber or bombers inside of the stadium would do just as well at triggering a panic stampede with mass casualties.
I think they have to be... especially since they haven't had time to finish their investigation. You don't want your suspects to bolt while you gather evidence. Right now, the only obvious perp is the kid who blew himself up.

Hinrichs was wearing a green vest that appeared to have wires in it, when trying to buy ammonium nitrate fertilizer.
Plain clothed Norman police officer overheard conversation, went outside and took down tag number.

Another case of internet tracks being erased....
Total BS. Of course, they're not going to have direct links to OBL and carry an AQ card with them. They are forced to operate under the radar screen through mosques and cells, just as they did before 9/11. Several of the 9/11 terrorists attended a Jersey City mosque. That is where they do their dirty plotting.
How large would you say the Pakistani student community is at OU? Tens, hundreds? Are they rich brats who hold lavish parties, the way the ones here in SF are? Many come here to major in either tech / sci undergrad or finance / econ then go on to get MBAs or other advanced degrees. Then some return to Pakistan to rejoin the elites there, a few stay here as professionals - companies sponsor them to get H1Bs and in certain cases Green Cards.

Does anyone remember the bus driver whose throat was slit on 9-11, I think it happened in Tennessee. The story was that a passenger just suddenly jumped up and used a knife on the driver. I believe the bus crashed. I don't think I heard anymore about it as 9-11 took over all news reporting. Was there ever a terrorist connection found?
I went to the site and it is guess what, gone, vanished.
Never heard anything more on following cases:
-fuse and other bomb materials in a bus locker
-who killed the woman from the Tennessee driver's license agency who was caught selling legit IDs to middle eastern men from NYC/NJ knowing that they were fictional identities (the men were sentenced to time served and released to be deported)
-who put the bomb around the pizza delivery guy's neck
and the biggie:
-who mailed the anthrax letters
