A Supreme Court justice has to have a well-developed judicial philosophy, some constitutional theory of how things ought to be.

Why ?

Bader-Meinhof Ginsburg, Breyer, Stevens, and Souter "have a well-developed judicial philosophy, some constitutional theory of how things ought to be."

I could do a better job than any one of them.

Probably true concerning O'Connor as well
