Oklahoma is known as being a state with a large Agricultural base. Hinrichs most likely had decided to take up farming and was laying in some supplies. He was also reputed to be unhappy with his major. I think it is not unreasonable to think he was switching from Engineering to Agriculture. OU does have its Aggies, does it not?
If you look at it with the calm rational eyes of Boren we might conclude that Hinrichs choose the open space by the stadium to commit suicide because it reminded him of his frustration of being taken away from his love of farming by the demands of his ME studies.
