NORMAN, Okla. -- The general manager of a Norman feed store said Tuesday that Joel Henry Hinrichs III had inquired about purchasing a significant amount of ammonium nitrate, the primary ingredient used in the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing.
Dustin Ellison, the general manager of Ellison Feed & Seed on Porter Avenue, said that a man matching Hinrichs' description had come into the store days before he blew himself up on OU's campus. Ellison said the man asked about ammonium nitrate, but couldn't offer a reason why he needed it.
After the bombing, Ellison said he thought nothing of it. However, when he saw Hinrichs' photo, it triggered his memory.
To this point, authorities still suggest Hinrichs' only motive for blowing himself up was suicide. The FBI released a statement Tuesday evening saying that "there is no known link between Hinrichs and any terrorist or extremist organization(s) or activities."
The release also indicated that the FBI believes there is "no known current threat posed by any additional explosive materials."
Ellison noted that his store doesn't carry ammonium nitrate any longer after recent legislation required new paperwork for stores to sell the product.

If they investigated everyone who bought AN, or even asked about it, they'd need to hire a lot more investigators.
Last night on the news one of the local reporters walked from where the bomb blew up to the stadium entry. It took her two minutes. So I'm just pointing out that the early reports said 100 yards from the stadium etc. It wasn't quite that close.
All you folks up in arms about the AN seller--this is farming country. We use fertilizer. That's a fact of life. Farmers, like anyone else, don't always shop at the same place for the fertilizer. One place runs out, so they try the place up the road; one place ticks them off, so they take their business somewhere else. It should NOT be unusual that this guy doesn't report everyone who asks.
I agree with what you're saying.... but did you see the interview this evening on channel 9 of the guy? He says on the interview that the guy trying to buy the AN had on green fatigues.... with wires or something in his pockets... and that the guy did not have a beard etc like a middle easterner. Also it was reported but now somewhat retracted that a Norman policeman off duty was in the store, and went out side and wrote the guys tag number down. Norman police now won't confirm or deny that.
To his credit our local talk show guy..Jeff Ward, KLBJ Austin..talked about this on his radio show yesterday. He thought the deafening sound of it's non-coverage was strange also. Normally he is only good for fluff shows but maybe he actually covered something relavent for once.
Seems to me that AN is spread in the Spring. Right now, people are getting their crops in.
Asking for AN in the Fall seems odd. And while plenty of people have the equipment to spread their own, the propane company does a lot of it. But then, I only live around farmers, I am not one.
I understand.... what is a normal amount for purchase by an average farmer? pounds, tons, truckloads?

I don't have any idea if they shave their beards or not. I was just reporting what the sales guy (actually the store manager) said on the evening news. He's the manager and he was the one who denied selling the AN to the bomber.
I put AN down on my lawn in spring and fall. (can't do it in the summer because it will burn it up). I live at a golf course and the version of bermuda I have loves the stuff.. But I only buy it two 40 pound bags at a time....
The FBI has ruled out any terrorism link, but are they looking at his, um, political leanings? Is this the deranged Bush syndrome taken up a notch?

I saw the end of the interview on Channel 5--dang their hides, they like to start the newscast a minute or so early, so I often miss things. I sure didn't see that part. I would say if it made a blip on his radar, he should have informed someone. Then again, with an off duty officer already checking things out--maybe he felt it was being taken care of.
The kid moved here from Colorado... so you know he's got a screw loose to begin with :)
