Hinrichs (OU Suicide Bomber) Tried To Buy Ammonium Nitrate
KOCO TV ^

NORMAN, Okla. -- The general manager of a Norman feed store said Tuesday that Joel Henry Hinrichs III had inquired about purchasing a significant amount of ammonium nitrate, the primary ingredient used in the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing.

Dustin Ellison, the general manager of Ellison Feed & Seed on Porter Avenue, said that a man matching Hinrichs' description had come into the store days before he blew himself up on OU's campus. Ellison said the man asked about ammonium nitrate, but couldn't offer a reason why he needed it.

After the bombing, Ellison said he thought nothing of it. However, when he saw Hinrichs' photo, it triggered his memory.

To this point, authorities still suggest Hinrichs' only motive for blowing himself up was suicide. The FBI released a statement Tuesday evening saying that "there is no known link between Hinrichs and any terrorist or extremist organization(s) or activities."

The release also indicated that the FBI believes there is "no known current threat posed by any additional explosive materials."

Ellison noted that his store doesn't carry ammonium nitrate any longer after recent legislation required new paperwork for stores to sell the product.

Stay tuned to Eyewitness News 5 for further details.

I wonder what the response would be if this had occurred in New York City or Washington?

If we knew what name he used online (computer bulletin boards, usenet, etc.) we could search a wonderful archive of postings.

The "American Taliban"'s progress from musician to muslim fanatic can be read in his posting history. Even one of the students stopped in that weird chase in Florida (the ones on the toll road) had a posting history available at the time (he encouraged the ISLAMming of an MS-NBC poll to put Mohammed at the top ranking of influential philosphers, they were successful). Those posts are no longer archived, BTW.

Used to be everything stayed online (I had some nearly 20 year old posts online) but now archives clean up a bit more frequently.

Nichols' wife was a Phillipina, can you say "Abu Sayef" which has ties to AlQaida...'John Does' were originally described as middle eastern looking men, but by that afternoon, the Clinton Administration was practically breaking its neck to apologise to Arab-Americans and the anti-right wing-Christian-Conservative-pro-gun-Constitution reading-white male "domestic terrorist" jihad was on...

I will affirm that. I buy about 30 tons of ammonium nitrate each year for my hay pastures. I have done buisness with the same outfit for years. They have a spreader truck to put it out. They do this during hay season many times each day for different ranches. The thing that concerns me is that he had an 'appreciable' amount of NH4nitrate in his dorm or apartment. People in apartment might need a tablespoon for their pet geranium. How much did he have? What other detonation devices did he have? What kind of jihadist material did he have. Did he have any diesel?

All of this does not add up to a suicide by any other means but accidental suicide. Top it off with a Pakistani roomate and an affiliation with a local mosque and you have your home grown terrorist probably under the influence of someone at the mosque. Nothing else makes sense.

The partents who have kids at the school need to take a good look at this. They deserve to know before another explosion like the Murrah Building goes off during a football game.

Reports indicated that there would have been enough to tell if he had shaved below the beltline. I don't know if they shave that low, if at all.

Could be, but you cannot buy or sell ammo on eBay, so it is likely eBay is an euphamism, too.

"I am listening to Rick Roberts subbing for Michael Savage today.

I was listening to him also, and the one thing he said that REALLY caught my attention, was he was telling about the case (can't remember) exactly when it was, but some guy was in the LA airport with some kind of explosive. For months they kept telling us it was not terrorist related, and then about 6 months later they said it was.

Does anyone else remember that case and if so can you post information on it?

The number killed in OKC bombing was 168. Suggested reading for all - The Third Terrorist, by Jayna Davis. Scary stuff, and brings back into focus a lot of the early police and first responder reports that were soon suppressed.

Hope this isn't a replay with the Hinrichs dude. Seems like the media and the blog accounts are at odds, with the truth somewhere waiting to be discovered. And hopefully not covered up!

Well, it's in the frat minutes. All these euphemisms, if that's what they are, and used so freely. The frat's involved, if that's the case. Isn't it some sort of engineering frat and not a social frat, anyway?

"Seems he would know his regular customers and would notify someone if confronted by a stranger looking to buy a large quantity of such a notorious substance!

Remember the Oklahoma bombing was 10 years ago. Just because the article says the person was the general manager of the store, it is possible he could be a manager and still be quite young, say early 20s. If this is the case, the bombing 10 years ago probably did not leave an impression on him. Not knowing how old this person is I wouldn't condem him to much for not calling the FBI.

I don't. I grew up in the corn/soy bean fields of Indiana and have no idea what an unusual fertilizer request would be.

As I understand it, it is an engineering frat, but has a social aspect as well, not strictly a party outfit. I cannot claim first hand knowledge there.

Ebay has really strict rules about not selling firearms, ammunition, aome militaria, etc. which I imagine may be to avoid BATF and local regs as well as liability.

The rules are posted in the restrictions on the website.

If the computer I am on had a real mouse instead of this touchpad thingie, I'd post links, but those are a real pain for me with a touchpad...

Don't know the reason but the threat level was raised a few weeks ago during Rita.

No known "current" threat because of additional explosives although reportedly numerous explosives were removed from his place.

There is a difference between a suicide bomber making and using one bomb and making numerous additional bombs which are all in the custody of authorities. The only things left to wonder is if they got them all (and what he planned to do with them).

Do you mean the shooting deaths of 2 people at the El Al counter at LAX (by an Egyptian)?

If so, here's a link to a google cache for a cnn story about it. (I don't know about a guy with explosives at LAX, maybe I missed that one.)

I was listening to Rick Roberts sitting in for Michael Savage too.
He was talking about the media silence surrounding the OU bombing and taking calls about the same subject. One caller said he was actually in the stadium and heard and "felt" (don't know if he actually used that word but suggested there was some sensation) the explosion. He said that nothing was said about what had happened.
He (RR) went to a commercial and when the show returned to the air all of a sudden IT WAS NOT RICK R. but a replay of M. Savage from last night!
Very odd. No explanation given.
Left me wondering...hmmmmm? Did "they" tell Rick Roberts to shut down the discussion and he refused to go along and they took him off the air and replaced with last night's taped show?!
I am in Florida.
Did anybody else have this experience anywhere else while listening?!
