what kind of questioning went on during the rehnquist confirmation, as opposed to the dog and pony show of today??

It would be nice to either:

A: Have a proven track record of decisions that illustrate a
political philosophy

or

B: Be able to find out exactly what the beliefs a nominee has during the confirmation process.

But because of the precedent set during the clinton years, and followed today, B won't happen. And with Miers, A can't happen.

So all we are left with is "trust us".

Just like we're supposed to "trust them" on securing our borders or controlling spending.

I'd like to have a nominee that is something more than a crapshoot.

It may seem like a crap shoot to you, but it is far from it. The fact that GWB made a decision unlike common lines of thought tells me that he is not operating out of fear, politics, or ulterior motives, but with informed judgment as to what is best for our country at this time in our history.
