Harriet Miers is not a "movement conservative." That's all one needs to know about President George W. Bush's new pick for the Supreme Court - why she is going to be confirmed and why many conservatives are nervous about her.
Movement conservatives don't want to conserve the status quo; they want to change it, rolling back the last few decades in a quest for the good ol' days. In the words of movement leader Rush Limbaugh, "Women were doing quite well in this country before feminism came along." Feminism, along with liberalism, secularism, and multiculturalism, are among the "isms" the movement wants to repeal.

Enter Harriet Miers, who has never been either a Federalist or a movement woman. Before joining Team Bush in the mid-'90s, she worked her way up the legal ladder, mixing lucrative corporate law with traditional pro bono undertakings. Along the way, we now learn, she gave campaign contributions to various Democratic campaigns. That's standard practice inside law firms, giving money to the powerful without regard to party. But that sort of get-along, go-along approach is exactly what the movement reviles.

An ex-White House lawyer told me that Miers was shocked to discover the lawyers in the White House counsel's office were Federalist Society types, all of them scornful of the ABA - her ABA.

Makes you wonder what will happen when her ABA clerks clash with Scalia, Thomas, and Robert's Federalist clerks - and become friends with Souter and Ginsburg' ABA clerks.
bump
Is this the same James Pinkerton on that dreadfully awful show "Fox News Watch"?
I'm a member of the ABA, and the only thing I like about it is that they sell me cheap life insurance.
But she was the best(suck up/lapdog)talent in all in the USA! Bush said so.
The hypocrisy is staggering. Since when has it been conservatives who seek major changes. In reality, it has been liberal activist judges who have sought to turn things upside down over the past few decades, and have by and large succeeded. We are just trying to restore common sense.
"Dreadfully awful" in the sense that they try to make the liberal media seem moderate or even conservative?
I only watch it when I want to get worked up.
Julius Irving is delighted to hear this news!
Dr. J? What does he care?
I guess you and Pinky did not see the glowing endorsement the VP of the Federalist Society gave Meirs in today's Washington Times.
Ah, our old friend, the unnamed source. An ex-White House lawyer at that, not even the normal anonymous Adminstration source.
A Federalist bigwig is on the record praising Miers. One with an actual name.
Federalist Society types

Harry Reid likes Miers; and Miers likes the ABA. This is getting better all the time.
Hopefully she won't turn out to be another Souter. Still, I can't help but wonder, what exactly makes her "the most qualified candidate"? And why would Bush want to piss off the conservatives so much?
I wish it was that ABA.
