Isn't this guy the author? If so, what are his credentials to be testifying in this manner?

Crichton wrote a great book, and is far more knowledgable than many so-called "scientists" who believe in global warming. That said, how is this different from having Meryl Streep testify about Alar, or Jessica Lange testify about farm problems?

Bravo to Mr. Crichton for bringing light to an area of science that few liberal policy makers want us to see. Namely that the researcher's data is self serving, prejudged and in many cases outright false and misleading.

MC is a medical doctor who did research before he decided writing was more fun than dealing with people and needles.
Most of his books are based on his presenting leading edge science theories as fiction. Better him than some supermodel who wants to save the rainforest.

Gee why would anyone take Micael Crichton's (magna cum laude Harvard and Harvard medical school grad) comments on climate seriously over the pronouncements of Babs Streisand (high school drop out)? (sarcasm)

He wrote 'State of Fear' which could be a primer for conservatives on how to deal with wack liberal "environmentalists" who are in fact less concerned about the environment than they are making a living.
(Not to be a 'spoiler' but to encourage you to read it, a pompous Martin Sheen character is eaten alive by cannibals.
So as well as illuminating, it's satisfying and gratifying.)

One prominent scientist told them: "Why should I make the data available to you, when your aim is to try and find something wrong with it."

Great read.

A truth in science is verifiable whether you are black or white, male or female, old or young. It's verifiable whether you like the results of a study, or you don't.

If their truth is so immutable - you wonder why the conclusions keep changing. Every week we hear about some new scientic "discovery" that disproves all the prior scientic thinking on an item

There is only One Truth. Don't try to change morals to agree to a changing science - keep your morals constant, and let the science change - as it will.

This is the guy who writes utterly extreme fiction isn`t it? I like his one movie Disclosure, about sex addict Michael Douglas telling Demi Moore "No"..No Demi, stop the torture. Yeah, OK. That movie was almost as believable as liberals saying they love America.

State of Fear really took it too the greenies.

My favorite book of his is non-fiction, The Great Train Robbery. Interesting tale indeed. But I always like it more when the stories are true.

Unless the Government intends to start “licensing” the right to do “science” the scientific community as a whole will continue to make its own decisions about the validity of scientific research.

I also wonder if those who would mandate that government funded research be conducted in triplicate intend to triple government funding of scientific research.

Excellent thread, and Michael Crichton is not only a genius, he also has common sense coming out his ears.

I can't let a thread featuring Michael Crichton go without posting a speech he gave to the National Press Corp in the early 1990's that predicted the fate of the mainstream media. That guy is brilliant. Please, please read this speech if you get a chance. I see it was made in 1993, I remember watching this like it was yesterday and just nodding my head in agreement. Here it is:

"Why should I make the data available to you, when your aim is to try and find something wrong with it."

All too common reply, best answered by "That's the basis of science.", "That's part of your job description.", "Must I FOIA you or can we do this like gentlemen"., etc.

If in Florida, "Because the Public Documents Acts says so."

Alas, who pays the Piper calls the tune. Due to limited, and often interlocking funding sources, most scientists are members of the "Great American Scientific Castrati Association."

They have been neutered to sing in the agency/academic institution chorus.

We pay taxes to support a scientific community where Agenda Uber Alles is as accepted as Deutschland Uber Alles was in the Third Reich.

Thus, when adhered to, the scientific method can transcend politics.

True. But scientists are human beings first, and subject to their emotions, just as we all are.

"Global Warming" is a tough places to start – to much difference of opinion within the scientific community.

Instead lets begin our program of rooting out shoddy work and fuzzy thinking someplace were there is virtually total agreement within the disciplines involved, and investigate the adherents of "Creation Science" instead.
