Since "Free Republic is an online gathering place for independent, grass-roots conservatism on the web. We're working to roll back decades of governmental largesse, to root out political fraud and corruption, and to champion causes which further conservatism in America.", I and others think it's a good idea to centralize what the goes on in the Senate (or House).
So if you see something happening on the Senate/House floor and you don't want to start a new thread to ask if anyone else just heard what you heard, you can leave a short note on who said what and about what and I'll try and find it the next day in THE RECORD. Or if you see a thread that pertains to the Senate, House, or pretty much any GOV'T agency please link your thread here.
If you have any suggestions for this thread please feel free to let me know.
Here's a few helpful links.
C-SPAN what a great thing. Where you can watch or listen live to most Government happenings.
C-SPAN 1 carries the HOUSE.
C-SPAN 2 carries the SENATE.
C-SPAN 3 (most places web only) carries a variety of committee meetings live or other past programming.
OR FEDNET has online feed also.
A great thing about our Government is they make it really easy for the public to research what the Politicians are doing and saying (on the floor anyway).
THOMAS where you can see a RECORD of what Congress is doing each day. You can also search/read a verbatim text of what each Congressmen/women or Senator has said on the floor or submitted 'for the record.' [This is where the real juicy stuff can be found.]
Also found at Thomas are Monthly Calendars for the Senate Majority and Senate Minority
And Monthly Calendars for the House Majority and Roll Call Votes can be found here.
THE WAR DEPARTMENT (aka The Dept. of Defense)
You and me both...
All I know is I am against any bill Kerry is for...how's that??? LOL
You know, I wish we could see more of the conference meetings between the House and the Senate...that is where all of this stuff is "fine-tuned" ....
Okay, what does increasing low income home energy assistance programs got to do with Defense spending???
Talk about non-germane!!!
I think the fireworks are here..
14 . DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE APPROPRIATIONS ACT, 2006--Continued -- (Senate - October 05, 2005)
She was on the Senate floor until about almost midnight last night....giving the SAME speech...
She says that FEMA has over 40 BILLION dollars left of the 64 Billion that Congress gave to hurricane relief...and since "fema isn't using it right now"....she wants to take "some" of it for education, health care, small business money, etc...
Of course, this is just "a little bit to get us by", until they really hit us up for the 250 BILLION....
She was saying that she will do "what it takes" to make sure that she gets this money for her state...before Congress takes its Columbus day weeks recess....
I don't know of that means filibuster....but she has been saying this same thing for I figure about 2 hours now, last night and today....SO FAR...
Where is everybody????
No one to tell us what is going on in the Senate???
Well, I have been in and out...and with so much "breaking news", I haven't been on C-span much either...
HOWEVER, I just got done seeing Sen. Landrieu give the SAME speech for the 3rd time in less than 24 hours...holding up a copy of the National Geographic with the cover page about Katrina....
And she cries, and cries, and critisizes and threats...and stomps her feet, because she hasn't been given the whole 54 BILLION that Fema has. She doesn't want FEMA to have it---she wants her hot little hands on it...
WORSE YET...she is complaining that the FEDERAL GOVT didn't fix the levees good enough, so therefore, it is up to the FEDS to pay for everything...(even though LA had been given BILLIONS to fix it and it has been pocketed and corrupted away)
Then, a little while ago, David Vitter got up and was proposing his OWN compromise bill, so they could get SOME money...just not all that Landrieu was asking for...
It was hilarious, because Landrieu kept referring to Vitter as the "JUNIOR SENATOR"...over and over...so she could put him in his place.
Finally, he started talking and when she tried to ask a question he said "I will not give up the floor to the SENIOR Senator from LA"....and kept on talking..Saying that he would rather go home this week with something for his constiutents, than "hold out" for more, and go home for the week's recess with NOTHING...
Landrieu said she wouldn't go along with his plan, because the President hasn't given her anything in writing that says the he and his Administration won't promise to consider their STATE a 1st Class state,....instead of a SECOND Class state...LOL
Not kidding...she wants it in writing that they will treat her state right...and give them loans that won't have penalties for non-payment, or something.
Then, Sen. Stevens came up and wanted the floor...and basically told both of them to go away...that they are there to take care of the DEfense Spending Bill, and he didn't know if they would have TIME to deal with the Senator's bills....
Since then, we have been in about an hour and a half quorum call!!!
Doncha know missy Landrieu is doing some foot stomping somewhere...and probably all over Frist's toes. She was wanting a bunch of money for the health needs of all of the LA citizens, and Frist said that they have been told to go to the Emergency room or doctors....and that their bills will be picked up by the FEDS...
But, oh no, that wasn't good enough----she said "I don't think it is fair to expect people to have to stand in lines at emergency rooms"....especially if they had insurarance with their jobs that aren't there right now....and Frist said that the GOVT has no way of knowing which people had insurance or didn't....so everyone is being treated the same...
Ruh-Roh....she was not happy!
This piano music is killing me....but, I don't want to watch any of the cable shows that are about Rove going to prison, Miers being worse than a legal secretary...Avian Flu going to kill everyone...unless you live in New York, and ride the subway...there you have to worry about IEDS...
OR...listen to Clinton's interiew or Gore's speech...
Is is safe yet? Oh, yeah, have any of the cable channels discussed the suicide bomber in Oklahoma yet????
I know what you mean about Landrieu and the piano music, everytime I flipped it on today it was a Democrat or this music.
The LA Senators are making me actually appreciate my own state. LOL
Though if in their place I'm not convinced they wouldn't behave the same way.
Nope. Still no leaking of the suicide bomber. Given their secrecy I'm curious if there have been other botched suicides in areas we didn't have local on spot Freeper reports.
Somebody shut down Mary Mary when she attempted to waive the quorum rule. "Is there objection?"
By golly, there was! ;-) First time I have ever seen that. Anybody catch if it was Vitter who objected?
I was watching them and thinking the same thing...and also thinking about what I would do in their place...
But, I think part of the problem is the STATE itself...it has such a reputation for graft, corruption and other problems...not to mention the people that are running the state are nincompoops...
WHY would WE trust our money in those people's hands???
I betcha the darn Congress caves though...but I hope not...9/11 set a bad enough precedence....we don't need to set more.
The Landrieu telethon, that's what it was.
It was either Vitter or Stevens...they were the only ones on the floor, I think...
I bet it was Stevens....even though Vitter was sort of standing up to her....I think he knows he has to "live with her"...and probably tries NOT to antagonize her needlessly.
Thanks for the recap ... I've been running around most of the day trying to get read for a party tomorrow and haven't had a chance to watch the Senate
You want my opinion about Marys hissy fit?
The State of Louisiana is broke and this is a way to get money following into their pockets and not a dang thing about helping the people in need
She is gonna have to fight Lott for it .. he was on some show earlier complaining about needing more money for his state
DAng....I wish one of the "satellite" radio networks could bring us "quorum call radio" so we could listen to what is going on "behind the scenes"....betcha there is some fighting.....
Sen. Stevens is already mad that McCain, Warner and Graham were trying to pull a fast one yesterday...and judging from the response...they didn't get away with "sliding it in under the radar"...
The White House and others like Mark Levin and Rush are all over the 40 something Republican Senators that voted for that amendment about torture...
I am thinking Reid might be trying to get Landrieu to filibuster...and Frist is telling Vitter...you better NOT...
Thanks for the summary! I enjoyed reading your post. Can't say I blame you for not wanting to watch all the talk shows....Matthews was ecstatic about the prospect of Rove being indicted; OReilly was kind of boring tonight; Newt supported the Meirs choice on Hannity and Colmes, and now I'm watching Joe Scarborough (because I don't like Greta's show) slam FEMA and intending to slam Bush shortly! I also have a window open to cspan waiting for the quorum call to end. I did see a little bit of the Senior Senator from LA throwing a hissy fit saying she would stay there until 4:30 in the morning to get what SHE wanted!!!
LOL. What a petty bunch of blowhards we have in the Senate. Principle be damned, the people be damned, we are important!
Thank you for the summary of the talk shows...just as I thought...not what I wanted to watch....
I just KNEW that no matter how great of a speech that Bush gave...or any of the other big news of the day...the ONLY thing that Chrissy and most of MSNBC would care about, is Rove having to testify again...
blech!
Last time she was up, and for the 3rd time that I have seen her wave around the Natl. Geographic...I was thinking that if someone really cared about her and her state...
they would tell her that she is antagonizing people, rather than gaining sympathy...she about has me ready to call my congresscritters to BEG them to turn down ANY money for LA!
But, I hope they don't...because anything we give her/them will partly be pocketed anyway.
I also heard today, that they don't want the Corps of Engineers to fix the levees to withstand a 4 or 5 catagory hurricane..because it will cost too much, and take too long...
I hope someone records that for posterity...because if they don't...and this happens again, I don't want to see any LA politician in Washington with hands out for help.
