You do not have to be a great lawyer to be elected President of a state bar ass'n. In fact, it's not a stellar recommendation at all.

Some of those wonderfully intelligent lawyers include people like JRB, Luttig, Alito, etc. He promised to pick well qualified judges in the mold of Scalia and Thomas. He has chosen someone who is woefully unqualified when there is a field of exceptional jurists to choose from. You're just trying to put the best face on a bad decision.

Who said anything about being a great lawyer? I mean she is a good person with a good head on her shoulders who can get along with people. This is NOT just any old state, this is the state bar association of TEXAS! As you should know, Texans are some special folks. They have good hearts and practice a deeply practical conservatism.

Squawk as much as you like about this nomination, it is a done deal and all your squawking and complaining are a waste of time and energy. I hope that at least it makes you feel better or more important or something.

Luttig would have been good, I agree. I am sure the President considered nominating him and the others on your short list, but for his own reasons, which we will probably never know, decided that Miers was the best way to go. He may be wrong, but he is operating with more complete information than we have.
