The Coming Explosion Over Miers – Redux (Too many conservatives going off half-cocked.)
The American Thinker ^ | October 3, 2005 | Thomas Lifson

Posted on 10/03/2005 4:35:19 PM PDT by quidnunc

Rush Limbaugh has found the information that Harriet Miers is an evangelical Christian, a member of a church in Dallas that most would describe as "fundamentalist." I believe that this vindicates my earlier analysis based on mistaken information about a Ministry supported by Ms. Miers.

Blue state fundamentalists tend to hate evangelicals the way that Islamists hate Jews: viscerally. It will take enormous willpower for many of them to avoid saying that one who believes in the literal word of the Bible should not be allowed a place on the Supreme Court. They played footsie with the position that a devout Catholic would be disqaualified.

To partially quote my earlier post: this is a battle the Democrat left can't win with a majority of the American public, which sees religious faith as a good thing. As far as I am concerned about the coming attacks, Dirty Harry summed up my feelings: "Go ahead — make my day."

We have a Republican majority, but not all of those Republicans are conservatives. Surely you realize that.

No, I am not saying conservatives are second class citizens. What I am saying is that we do not have a conservative majority. That is a fact.

Some of the RINO's will vote for a conservative only if they have cover. Nominating someone who has writings like Janice Rogers Brown will cause them to cave at the first diatribe from the press. I don't like it, but that is a fact.

Do you not remember George Voinovich up in fromt of the Senate crying over his being asked to support Bolton, and the fact that he voted no? Do you think someone like that would suddenly gather his courage to vote for someone like Brown? HA!

All of this talk about Bush lacking courage ignores the make-up of the Senate. I do not blame Bush for not picking a fight in which there was a good chance he might lose...with disasterous results for his presidency and the party.

I totally disagree on W's stand on the border but since he has total say in his pick for SCOTUS I'll trust his choice. He has a pretty good record so far.

"...There is no doubt Harriet Miers is a conservative. Bush has known and worked with her for too long to not know her core values..."

I disagree with that assumption...I bet if Gonzales views on abortion weren't know Bush could have and would have just as easily rewarded him instead.

Bush must have stayed up late studying Zun Tsu the great military tactician of ancient China. His strategies are still taught at the war college today.

As for me, I prefer General Patton over Zun Tsu...I believe it was Patton who said to 'Always Take the Offensive - Never Dig In!'

Do you have facts to support the assumption that she is not?

Other than she's a complete unknown...no, I don't have any facts to support an assumption she's not an adequate candidate.

Please understand, I never claimed she isn't.

I'm looking to you to give me the facts of her record to support her. It's what I would prefer to do. --- But, I've been getting very little help.

He's going with a stealth nominee with no conservative record rather than a judge with an outstanding record of judicial conservatism on the bench.

"Why are you so willing to fawn all over this nominee"

I am not fawning over her. I am supporting the President. I would have liked to see Janice Rogers Brown nominated and then a big old fight in the Senate resulting in a Rat filibuster culminating in the Republicans using the nuclear option to secure her confirmation, but I admit that I am a little more conservative than the average American.

Some guy on the AM band knows how to use Google?
I was really looking for a story here...

Hmmm...I guess you love to claim people don't have facts but run away when you have none of your own... I'm still waiting.

Well, to be honest, I don't know what you're waiting for.

I'm the one waiting for facts about this nominee's credentials. I want to support her....but, you're not giving me anything to base that on.

Please...I sincerely ask you not to hold back. I want to be in your corner. -- I'm counting on your insights and research to help me get there.

Thanks.

You might be right.

I still think Specter would have come around. The gang of 14, especially Graham, got scared over the criticism on their deal. McCain actually has been behaving himself. E.g., elections have consequences. Plus, he and Hagel want to run for President; they couldn't risk a no vote.

Also, Bush (or his surrogates) should have highlighted Kelo to rag on judicial liberals. Kelo should be the GOP's abortion issue--if you won't vote to overturn Kelo, you don't get confirmed.

But it would have been an incredibly ugly process. It would have been a degrading process, too, for the person who was nominated. And (I might add) for the country.

Correct. But when, in recent times, have Democrats shown a scintilla of decency about what's good for the country? For them, it's all about power. So - call their bluff, let them reject a supremely qualified woman or minority, and, if they succeed - go to the mattresses in the '06 elections, win more seats and renominate the same person. If you want to win anything in life, you do need to take risks. I understand the reluctance - but at some point we're going to have to try, in spite of the broad preference for comfy (don't-call-it) Socialism.

Politics is a nasty, amoral business. The Founders knew that people would always tend to vote themselves ever-larger shares of other people's wealth, given the chance. That's why the Constitution contains such specific checks and balances - now diluted and distended by the Congress and the Court. I had a similar conversation with Pukin' Dog this morning, and the more I've thought about it, the more I think he was right: when it comes to what you believe, never surrender.

What would it take for this county to truly have a conservative majority? Sixty GOP senators? Sixty five? At some point you have to have hunker down and have the philosophical fight for conservatism and conservative principles. The Dems were demoralized. I would suggest that if we took on the Dems we would have won. If we narrowly lost, it would have only energized our based for 06 and 08. Now our side is demoralized while we've given our enemies new energy.

Sorry. This was a ill-timed tactical retreat. We have only delayed the final apocalyptic conflict between conservatives and liberals.

"They demand a fire-breathing, in-your-face, old-time-religion-preaching conservative whose nomination would trigger a to-the-death confrontation with the Democrats. "

No, we just want someone who had demonstrated their conservative credentials. And yes, we want the Republicans in the Senate, including the gang of 14 who kicked Bush's ass already, to have to make a real decision: whether to support a real conservative nominee or whether to confirm their status as RINO.

I know it's a lot to ask of Republicans, but that's what we expected when we voted for them.

Tell me truthfully. Are Roberts and Miers your favorite choices, or do you simply trust anyone GWB picks?

I saw that too. Roberts made his first mistake on the bench going down the steps at the supreme court.

I am truly amazed at those that are bashing the President because of his pick. I find it hard to believe that the President that fought for Janice Rogers Brown and Priscilla Owen would appoint someone just to avoid any conflict. So far we've found out that she is a strong believer in the right to keep and bear arms, she's a Christian, the President has worked with her for at least 10 years, Jay Sekulow supports her and Pat Leahy doesn't.

I am sure that the Left is just thrilled at the knee jerk reactions. Old Harry and Chuckie really set the stage for the conservatives to jump ship. By playing chicken little and eating our own, conservatives are displaying the very traits that gave us 8 years of Clinton.

You don't have to walk in lockstep with the President but you also don't have to start flinging knives at him to the degree that has gone on here today.
