BIRMINGHAM, Alabama (Reuters) - Former Alabama Chief Justice Roy Moore, who was fired in 2003 for disobeying a federal order to remove a Ten Commandments monument from a courthouse, said on Monday he would be a candidate for governor of Alabama in 2006.

Moore, a fundamentalist Christian from northern Alabama who supports school prayer and opposes gay marriage, pledged to fight against higher taxes, tighten restrictions on illegal immigrants and improve education if elected.

"It is a crucial time to run for office when rights and liberties are being eroded, taxes climb, the education of our children declines and morality erodes while judges tell children they cannot pray," Moore said at a rally in Gadsden, 63 miles northeast of Birmingham.

"I believe that God is leading me to uphold the laws in Alabama and guide its policies," Moore said in an interview after he announced his candidacy.

I agree completely with the right to display the 10 commandments.

But Judge Moore goes further and the source of sovereign law is God's word. What happens if Judges start over-ruling the constitution because they think God's word says something different?

What if judges start over-ruling the constitution because it's a living, breathing, evolving... Oh wait, never mind.

Trust me, it wouldn't hurt if God's law was instituted. As far as I know America's law and God's law don't conflict, but if given the choice I would go with the latter.

Qualities I'd like to see in '08 Presidential candidates.

A little background reading on the removal of the Ten Commandments from the Alabama Judicial Building. It appears that Roy forced the U.S. Supreme Court's hand to ensure his martyrdom.

ps--Harri Ann Smith has NO name ID outside of the Dothan area and cannot raise the $15 million plus it will take to win the Governor's race.

Judge Roy Moore will win if he runs for governor of Alabama. A vote for Moore is a vote for God.

Hey troll, we're well aware of Roy Moore's record here; that's why we support him so strongly.

Leave it to Reuters to come up with a dumb-ass headline like that. What, their presses will melt if they print Moore's name??

I find that very hard to believe--you got some evidence to back that up? She won't get money from the evangelicals--they will give money and vote for Roy Moore. And the Business community will be mostly behind Bob Riley. Sure there are a few folks still P.O.'d about Amendment One, but Riley's been good for business in this state. The majority of the business community will back Riley. The PACS are not handing out money yet, so there is simply no way that ANYONE, much less Harri Ann Smith has 6 million campaign dollars in the bank right now!
