© 2005 WorldNetDaily.com Local and federal agents were carting away what was described as a huge cache of explosives from the apartment of the 21-year-old student who blew himself up outside the stadium where 84,000 watched a Sooners football game.
Joel Henry Hinrichs III, 21, a junior from Colorado Springs, Colo., died in the explosion, according to FBI officials.
Investigators believe Hinrichs detonated a bomb about 8 p.m. Saturday, just 100 yards away from the packed football stadium.
Police were overheard telling residents it would take "several trips and could take up to 24 hours" to remove it all, according to the Daily Oklahoman.
A canister trailer used for detonating or transporting potentially explosive material was being used to haul items away.
Officials said Hinrichs' motive for blowing himself up Saturday near the Gaylord Family - Oklahoma Memorial Stadium during the second quarter of OU's game against Kansas State remains under investigation.
OU President David Boren said Hinrichs was a student "who had very, serious personal problems that led to this tragic death."
Because of what happened, Boren said, the FBI had taken over the investigation.
Boren said the student had explosives strapped to his body.
Investigators would not say whether they believe Hinrichs intended to go inside the stadium before the detonation happened.
so they found the room mate now? is he Pakistani?
I watched that video last night on Channel 4 and about freaked out. OUPD and the powers at be need to answer for padlocking us in -- it is outrageous.
Noticed that Boren has come out with another release to everyone. Guess he got the hint the story was growing big legs and people on campus were not buying the original story. Kids are smart.
Have been saying he should have come out immediately and said this is an ongoing investigation and I cannot comment and I would have understood. What he sent out now should have been at the beginning.
I can't believe they call a guy who blows himself up next to a crowded stadium "an isolated suicide". He could have blown himself up at home or in a field or in his car.
makes alot of sense.
I am wondering - do the entrances to the stadium have any kind of video surveillance? there might be video tapes of his attempts at entering. someone in the media should ask before the tapes "mysteriously dissappear".
I stayed up for Channel 5 news after the game -- flat out weird reporting. What did you think about us being padlocked in the stadium from Channel 4 news? I saw the pictures and freaked.
I will check The OPklahoman site -- they don't charge except for archived articles over 14 days.
The reason the stadium was padlocked, was the because the guy had tried to enter the stadium a few times earlier and was turned back. They didn't know if there were others.
Defies my belief as well especially when my front window shook when the Norman police detonated all the bomb making stuff from his apartment and I live about five miles away.
2+2 do not equal 4 in this instance!
I'll keep checking in for further updates.
Do you or does anyone know if Jayne Davis is still a reporter in Oklahoma?
That's what I am hearing as well. They don't pat people down when you go in the gate. They don't allow backpacks but they do allow large bags and they do a cursory search of those.
What if someone had already gotten in before this happened? Fortunately, I didn't know about the padlocking at the time. What is something had happened and emergency crews need in there immediately. Someone was taken away in an ambulance while we were waiting in line, what if they needed in the stadium. I know -- a lot of what if's. All I can say is that they need a better plan then locking us in with padlocks.
Exactly, that's why the bomb squad blew up the empty backpack.
I have heard that reported several times that he tried to enter the stadium. So much for spin of the lone isolated bomber that sat in a serene place and blew himself up. (sarcasm)
BTW, reported by our media and in an interview with his father that there was NO suicide note.
If he was going to do this in the name of Islam, wouldn't he want to wait until Ramalamadingdong to get a double blessing on every murder?
I think it is like a two for one deal.
Me too.
