Who Is Harriet Miers?
ABC News ^ | Oct. 3, 2005 | ABC News

Oct. 3, 2005 — Harriet Ellan Miers is White House counsel and was formerly President Bush's personal lawyer in Texas. She first served in the White House as staff secretary and was deputy chief of staff before she was named counsel upon Alberto Gonzales' transition to attorney general.

When he was the governor of Texas, Bush once publicly introduced Miers as a "pit bull in size 6 shoes."

Born and raised in Dallas, Miers earned her undergraduate degree in mathematics and her law degree from Southern Methodist University. In addition to her legal career, she served one term on the Dallas City Council.

Miers, 60, broke barriers for women throughout her career. She reportedly was the first woman hired by the prestigious Dallas law firm Locke Purnell Boren Laney & Neely, where she became a successful commercial litigator. She also became the first female president of the Dallas Bar Association in 1985 and was the first woman elected president of the Texas Bar Association in 1992.

Miers met Bush in the 1980s, according to published reports, and she was counsel for his 1994 campaign for governor. He appointed her chair of the Texas Lottery Commission in 1995.

Miers then was president of Locke, Purnell, Rain & Harrell and co-managing partner of Locke Liddell & Sapp before she joined the White House in 2001.

In addition, Miers was named one of the Top 50 Most Influential Lawyers by the National Law Journal in 1998, and she received numerous other awards from groups including the Dallas Women Lawyers Association, the Anti-Defamation League and the Dallas Association of Young Lawyers.

Get real. I was merely making a sarcastic point. Don't you have anything to add to the conversation, rather than just being snide?

There are enough non-RINOs to use the nuclear option, but the Republicans are a horrible majority party. Leadership is nill. If a party leader can't get 90% of his party (50/55) to vote on a crucial issue, then he is a complete failure.

I think it would be amusing to pull up all of the first reactions to the Roberts nomination and compare them to the Miers nomination. Somehow, I imagine it'll mostly be the same crew of worry-warts talking about "another Souter", "sell-out", and the like.

As for me, I prefer not to make any judgement until I actually get the facts. If she is as good as Roberts, then I'll be happy. But that's still a big "if".

I agree.

At face value, I'm not impressed with this nomination. Maybe she is quite conservative and Bush needed to stealth this nomination to get it through.

I'm gonna withhold total judgement 'til I've read and seen more - but for now, I think Bush could have done better.

No, I will vote for the most conservative candidate I can that has a chance to win. I am leaving the GOP because Bush holds more in common with Harold Ford than he led me to believe.

You know nothing of this woman...When you know her, then you should comment.

I know that other than a brief clerkship for a federal judge, she has no judicial experience whatsoever. I'm tired of taking things on blind faith. Deal with it.

She donated money to Al Gore and Lloyd Bensten in 1988.

And in 1988, Bentsen was a fiscal conservative (and probably would have been a better Presidential candidate than Dukakis) and Gore was a social conservative.

You're right about that, rdb3. This sort of stuff brings out all the paid opinion shapers, trolls and malcontents.

You know nothing of this woman.

Exactly.

Even if you ignore a judicial philosophy, one should earn their way to the Supreme Court with a certain obvious ability that stands you above the [legal] pack.

Barney:

1) When she donated to Gore in 1988, he was PRO LIFE!

2) Reagan was a Democrat at one time, don't forget.

you know what? Bill Rehnquist had no judicial experience prior to being seated on the Sup ct either. i don't think it hampered him in any way.

Well, griping that you wouldn't get to watch a big Senate fight over Judge Brown is hardly elevating the conversation.

As I have said on this thread, and on others, I think she is a good pick. Her undergraduate major in mathematics is an indication of a logical mind. Her having been on the board of two Christian ministries indicates a person who takes her faith seriously. She has integrity, as has been demonstrated in her career.

She is well-versed in law, is a self-made woman, and is trusted by the President.

I see no reason for all of this hysteria. And most of the hysterics are male posters, which I also find interesting.
