Quebec sends planes to assist fighting Los Angeles brush fires
Canadian Press
October 02, 2005
MONTREAL (CP) - The Quebec government is lending a hand to help fight the brush fires on the edge of Los Angeles.
The province's forest fire prevention agency has sent two CL-415 waterbombers to help combat the flames. The crew includes eight pilots and three technicians who might remain on site until the end of December depending on the situation.
Quebec said it would be ready to send more help if the fires grow.
Mon Dieu! Dropping tons of pea soup on the fire? What a waste!
Or perhaps ... melted cheese curds???
: )
Bottled water, perhaps? Maybe Yoplait?
Poutine. yummy. KFC Poutine is the best!!!!
Thank you, Quebec!
cabbage ?
AMEN!!!! The winds are scheduled to pick up again, tomorrow. We sure could use prayer out here.
A thank you to Quebec!
Quebec 1 and 2 on the scanner.
There was a good squabble on the radio Friday night between the California Department of Forestry Air Boss and the Super Scooper pilots. The Air Boss was all upset that the planes made a run near sunset (Contract tankers must be on the ground at sunset in the US) Well, the Super Scoopers were asked by the LAFD Command Helicopter to make two last drops on a dozer line near the 210 freeway, on the north side of the fire. After the CDF finished yelling at the Quebec pilot, he and the LA Fire helicopter got into it. As a result, LA Fire pulled their helicopters off the fire (they can fly at night) and said they wouldnt be back until morning...if then.
If you recall, a similar decision was made in the very early phase of the San Diego firestorms....where an airtanker was not launched because it might not have made it back to base before sunset. (It would have made the drop before sunset, but not land by dark) A lot of experts have wondered if a good phoscheck drop was made on the hunter's signal fire, if the blaze could have been contained somewhat....
NOT being a pilot...and not that anyone's asking my advise, but I'd think they could leave the final decision up to the man flying the plane...
quebec ping
The whole command structure was hosed up (pun intended) on Friday....Burbank was trying to hand off control of the incident to someone else, since they have an interim chief....LAFD didnt want to get involved, because they had units scattered all over the place, as did alot of other departments. So, the Super Scoopers made a lot of drops under the direction of whoever was acting as the controller at the time, LA City Fire, or LA County Fire...it kept changing throughout the day...until the CDF guy finally arrived on scene.
It was a lousy way to talk to our Canadian friends who actually went to work a day early to help out the authorities. (Contract started 10/1, they flew on 9/30)
What a mess....and with more winds coming.
Sheeeeesh.
Any word on the arsonist(s)?????
Nope...nary a word.
Thank you Quebec! Much appreciated.
Thank you Quebec. That is great.
