Time for the Republicans to Change Their Rules?
vanity
Posted on 10/02/2005 10:39:42 AM PDT by Hugin
The Republicans have always had much stricter standards than Democrats when it comes scandals. When a Republican says some releatively harmless remark such as Trent Lott's praising of Strom Thurmond at his birthday party, they either resign or are drummed out of positions of power. Meanwhile a Democrat like Robert Byrd can use the dreaded "N-word" on TV with no consequences. Republicans dump their own in the face of scandal. Democrats ignore it or defend their own till the last dog dies. We have all become used to it by now.
The Republicans have always put forward that their stricter standards simply show they are a more moral party. Yet still the Democrats often succeed in painting them as corrupt, and use every seeming admission of guilt as evidence, while never admiting to wrongdoing themselves. Their current "climate of corruption" mantra is a prime example.
With the DeLay indictment the Republican attempts at avoiding even the appearence of impropriety have backfired big-time. It seems clear that this partisan county prosecutor was well aware that Republican Congressional Caucus rules required Delay to step down. No matter what happens, he has scored a political victory by forcing Delay to step down, and disrupting the House leadership. It's also clear that any county DA could indict the entire leadership, forcing them all to step down.
So the question is, should the Republicans change their rules so that leaders only resign in the event of a conviction, not merely an indictment?
In my never humble opinion, both fairness and necessity dictate that they do so. What say you, FReepers?

I say fairness - and justice - dictates a legal offensive against the well-known corruption in the Democrat party, in fund-raising, electoral fraud, bribery, and treason.

The House Republicans did change the rule.
Democrats whined. MSM whined. Some conservatives here whined.
Delay thanked them for what they did, but asked they change the rules back. Delay wants this confrontation with Earle to clear his name.

Republicans take out their trash. Democrats enthrone theirs.
Decide for yourself which policy pays off over the long run.

When a Republican says some relatively harmless remark such as Trent Lott's praising of Strom Thurmond at his birthday party, they either resign or are drummed out of positions of power. Lott was stabbed in the back by his own party because a number of his fellow senators thought he was a wimp. The Thurmond thing was just and excuse.
Not that I'm criticizing, they were right about him.
To: Hugin
NO, they should go on the offense and start smearing some Dems, and their reporters, stay off the DNC hack Sunday shows, and come home and talk to us!!!!!!!!!!!!!
To: Zeroisanumber
A wimp? Then why did they replace him with another one?
The Senate should be completely disbanded, they are useless, completely compromised, elite, snobs, and have put themselves ahead of the American people.

No. We have come to expect the liberals to act a certain way. If we begin to act the same way, then they have changed us which was their goal to begin with. As long as we remain rational and reserved, they lose.....

As long as we remain rational and reserved, they lose..... OK, but what is rational about punishing people who have not been convicted of anything (and disrupting our own leadership), no matter how flimsy the charges, or politically motivated the accusor? Shouldn't we also uphold the principle of innocent until proven guilty?

Well yes, but Repubs need to get some guts and DO SOMETHING beside wuss out on issues. Be aggressive on wrong doing. Innocent until proven guilty sure, but by God, you need to GO AFTER THEM first! Repubs are gutless wonders, as a group. BTW, I'm not just whining to the wind, I write them often and tell them to get movin' and start fightin' for a change, we didn't elect them to sell us out.

Yours is a constant complaint and one most of us have made at one time or another. The problem is getting our voices heard. The MSM is the bullhorn for the left and the muffler for conservatives.
Rush seems to be getting fed up and is fighting back. Since our only outlets are talk shows and the internet we can turn up the heat ourselves and do the best we can from here. Calling and sending emails to the MSM will eventually get noticed if the numbers are high enough and avoiding products and companies from the other side gets noticed, too.
By the way, the Democrat mantra is "culture of corruption".

Yes, I like the way we do it. They keep Sheets, Splash Kennedy, Chuckie, Kerry, and the rest. I like the idea of getting rid of garbage.

Okay we are held to a higher standard. I don't mind being held to a higher standard, we point that out as a reason to be one of us. The Libs have a strategy of lie and publish and try the case in the court of public opinion. The MSM is collaborating with them (intentionally or not). This is as Rush says, the libs striking out because they are losing. We patch up our wounded and get on with the business of reforming this country back to it's core values. A General once told me "when you are winning, be cautious not to snatch defeat out of the mouth of victory". For us defeat would be to sink to their level.

Trent Lott is a first-order fool.
Any means to remove him from power short of shooting him are fine in my book.
