Does anybody remember Vice President Rockefeller? Moderate (or worse) on domestic issues, hawkish on foreign issues?

Bad example. The Republican Party never won a national election with Rockefeller on the ticket -- he was appointed vice president by Gerald Ford in 1974 when Ford became President after Nixon's resignation.

In fact, he didn't even run again on the GOP ticket in 1976. Bob Dole was Ford's running mate against Jimmy Carter.
