Agreed. Social issues have run their course and will have an ever decreasing effect on national politics and policy formation. The vast majority of the electorate has seen the devisive nature of the polarized social issues that have dominated the GOP's capture by the fanactics on the far right. Fiscal conservatism and attention to the necessity for a foreign policy consistent with globalization have become a far secondary concern since 1994, those critical and major concerns have had their run. For too long the GOP has been the mirror image of the self-destructive forces that savaged the Democratic Party at the turn of the 19th to the 20th Century; it lasted at least 12 years until the Wilson election.

tkathy ''nailed'' the issues that will regain prominence in 2008. The fringe of the party, the Falwells, Robertsons, Bob Jones and the other social zealots will simply have to plead their case to a mainstream leadership. Otherwise, we'll hand over the government to the Dems.

Are you kidding? Social issues are continuing to cause increased polarization. That's what's happening now. Some go to DU. Some go to FR. The debate is growing ever more shrill and will continue until one party falls.

***social zealots***

Who are the social zealots in the Republican Party?

Are you suggesting that the Republicans rewrite the party platform and remove all references to social issues?

I could not say it any better than Jim Robinson himself.
