One person was killed in an explosion about 100 yards from a packed football stadium at the University of Oklahoma last night in what officials are ruling a suicide.

The noisy explosion was heard inside Oklahoma Memorial Stadium, where 84,000 were watching the Oklahoma Sooners play Kansas State.

A police bomb squad reportedly detonated other explosives found at the site of the blast.

No spectators were allowed out of the stadium immediately following the blast, which occurred about 8 p.m. near halftime at the football game.

By 8:30, police were allowing fans to leave the area.

Football in Oklahoma (Norman) is BIG business and there is no way that anyone would want to upset that situation was the notion that this is anything other than a distraught student who committed suicide - forbid it be an organized effort to place someone inside the stadium with a bomb vest. Nope, its an 'individualized' suicide.

OK, I'll bite and add another bit of useless speculation. ; )

First, we all get upset when the press overplays exaggerates and basically spreads hysteria...and then it turns out to be much ado about a little. Think hurricane hysteria. So, they are reporting exactly what they know, which is basically nothing at this point. Isn't that what we want?

(I hate the press, so I have to tell you that it gives me great pain to have to defend them...but there you go.)

Second, if I were in charge, I would not want information released until all family members involved were notified—if indeed it was a suicide only. Or, until all conspirators where detained. So I would play my cards close to the chest.

I guess what I am saying is...the investigation is ongoing and the press has no information. That's not a conspiracy as much as the way it should be, imo.

From what I've read it sounds less like a suicide bombing than a suicide who used a bomb.

Would you please stop making sense??? If enough people thought like this, it would ruin all the good hysteria and tinfoil hat wearing here.

LOL. You want to hear something even funnier? I think the authorities did jam cell phones as a precaution. Exactly what we would want them to do immediately following a large explosion near a crowded stadium.

But it may end up meaning nothing more than that. Again, not a conspiracy, but a precaution. It makes me feel good to know that—shock—our "authorities" may actually be on the ball, just in case.

And I enjoy first hand accounts like PhiKappaMom who gave good insight into how things progressed throughout the evening because it gives great insights into the "feel" on the ground. But that doesn't mean that all the witnesses are correct. Some things may not have correlation to each other. Basic detective work.

Ah, well—speculation is fun. But I now return this thread to its previously scheduled programming, because I have Sunday shows to watch.

"But that doesn't mean that all the witnesses are correct. Some things may not have correlation to each other."

In virtually every plane crash, somebody (usually more than one person) reports seeing flames before the crash. In most cases, there are no flames UNTIL the crash, but people expect to see flames, so they do.

I'd be absolutely STUNNED if some of those 84,000 people hadn't reported seeing ME types running from the scene.

This sounds like the final scene to a "24" episode, where the bomber was supposed to do his business INSIDE the stadium, but was somehow stymied by Jack & Co--with the public blissfully unaware.

Ditto here for the husband. I believe he is trying to confirm my insanity. Nothing in the "Headline" News and no one's mentioned it so far on the Sunday Morning talk shows.

If I weren't a FReeper I would not even know anything happened in Oklahoma yesterday afternoon.

Wonder if the Senators and Representatives from Oklahoma know about this event?

I hope that every NFL game goes without incident today. It is the weekend before Ramadan and some strange things are happening in this Country, IMHO

Can't put order into a disorderly world . . . and I quit trying to a long time ago.

I agree. I suspect no one knows at this point, not even the authorities—but that is one of the things they are probably trying to figure out.

I think it is actually funny how some interpret the actions of authorities of proof of the facts of the case, rather than trained, preventative policy.

For the most part, I don't think people lie about seeing things, but are simply mistaken. Not that it's ever happened to me personally, of course ; ) Timelines are just very tricky, even when we aren't under pressure

Somewhere buried in the long thread it talks about the suicider was attempting to attach the bomb to a bus.

I read almost the whole thread last night. A witness - known to PhiKapMom - saw two dark skinned middle eastern men run away from the bomb blast and then separate. She felt convinced they were connected, and later spent some time talking to authorities. FBI and others were there. It is a serious matter. PhiKapMom is a trusted source and was there at the game, heard and felt the blast. If you have the time, check out the thread.

(PKM - just putting your name in the "to" box out of etiquette! If you read this, thanks very much for letting us all know what you saw and heard.)

I think it's ludicrous how many media outlets ask how far their tongues should go in their mouths when the Feds tell them to shut up.

I predict that unnamed authorities will conclude that the explosion was caused from eating too many beans, and that birds flew in his... ehem ear, which led to the explosion. The victim's name will be Muhammad Acccchhhh Nut-tabbi, a good muslim with a background in advanced chemistry.
