I agree with you 100% and I share your apprehensions.

That said, I happen to believe that Bush the younger is a lot smarter than his Pop, and I bet he would go to any lengths to make sure that he doesn't duplicate his Dad's disastrous "Souter mistake". That is, I think Dubya has inside information about all his candidates and he was convinced that Roberts was the real deal.

And as far as Souter goes, I remember getting a cold chill when I saw that that scumbag Rudman was his main sponsor. Plus, the Senate was firmly Democrat at that time. Something stunk about Souter then and, of course, the stench is overwhelming now. I don't sense the same smell with Roberts - - I just have a gut feeling that he's going to be a pleasant surprise.

Anyways, it's done now and all we can do is sit back and watch.

Regards,
LH

I doubt that he will nominate another Catholic --- so that would seem to eliminate Gonzales and a majority of Hispanics.

That's an interesting point of view. By the way, the next nominee will surely be a woman, a non Catholic woman. Perhaps a Presbyterian or a Baptist. Even if I'm a Catholic, I admit they're usually very principled.

Roberts was the moderate replacing O'Connor's vote (just not in her seat).

Now we need to find a conservative to replace Rehnquist's vote.

I'm Catholic too but I just think POTUS will not nominate another Catholic, although the democrats would have a hard time voicing opposition to Catholicsm... so that might be a GREAT move on POTUS'S part...lol.

My tag-line share your opinion... Besides I'd have liked to find something new in Robert's opinions and writings: about affirmative action, gun right, Roe v Wade and so on. For me he is still a "?". He could reveal another O'Connor or another Kennedy.

This liberal calls the Roberts nomination "superb." More reason I was right to be troubled by it.

Of course, because that battle is now over. Either she can claim victory or defeat. When given the choice, most people choose to claim victory.

Given everything we know about Roberts, you not knowing anything the rest of us don't, you have no reason to be troubled by him -- so long as your desire is for a fair minded jurist who will be guided by a strict construction of the US Constitution, and only the US Constitution.

If you secretly desire a Justice who will make politically motivated decisions that advance your personal ideology, or be guided by foreign law, religious scripture, Utopian social engineering blueprints, or his "feelings" then you indeed should be worried.

Yes, Susanne that's spelled Janice Rodgers Brown!!The President doesn't owe you anything, he just won the election in 2000 and 2004, can you get that in your narrow liberal skull???

I want a judge who will vigorously defend property rights. There is good reason to believe Roberts might not. He was lead counsel for the anti-property-rights side in the Tahoe case that led to a big defeat for the property rights movement. This should have disqualified him from being nominated.

I'd have no problem with a religious right judge on the bench. I know Schumer will have a problem with it, and I hope to hell he catches flak over it.

From the article: "Resurrecting dead candidates like Priscilla Owen or Janice Rogers Brown — both already filibustered for other appointments — would provoke a nasty confrontation. Democrats have put the White House on notice that they won’t be polite if he offers up such damaged goods. "

"Dead candidates" and "damaged goods". My, how powerful the Democrat filibusters are. This author makes it sound like both women became pregnant out-of-wedlock. The "shame" of being filibustered by the Democrat Senate must surely cause these women to hang their heads. Their families must shun them and their futures are bleak.

What liberal nonsense. This language alone justifies the nomination of either woman to set the record straight as to who is worthy and who shall be in power.

Democrats make me want to puke.

Lawyers are in it to make money. It's no different than Geragos representing the most reprehensible man on the face of the planet (Scott Peterson). If I was in that anti-property-rights camp (and I am not), I'd hire the best damn lawyer there was, and Roberts is it.

If Bush nominates a 'moderate' (liberal), it could split the GOP

That wasn't even his case, he merely filled in to argue it before the Supreme Court. Roberts believes that litigants and defendants both should have the best representation possible, and the law should do the rest. He believes, rightfully, that it is up to the Court, and only the Court, to decide the merits of a case.

It should be of no interested in who Roberts represented in his professional capacity, only his interpretation of the law.

Bull. The President owes the nation a Conservative constitutional originalist. It's about time the highest court did its job and stopped trying to legislate from the bench, dammit.

Both politically and morally, it’s the right thing to do.

Maybe politically but not morally by any means..

Let the Dems dream on in FantasyLand. They will oppose almost any nomination the President puts forward, so Bush and the GOP might as well go to the mattresses on this one, and pick the ÜberConservative they really want.
Sadly, Chief Justice Roberts does not have an identical twin brother.
It will be difficult to find a second candidate as brilliant, experienced and qualified as he is. I too go on Dr. Levin's approval.. if it's good enough for him, I'm cool with it too.
