They didn't have to. The enclosed spaces provided the killing power and shrapnel. But this was in the open. Need shrapnel to kill unless you're only after a half dozen folks on the blast pressure. I've had a 3/4 stick of TNT go off right next to me with no ill effects, but a slight ear ringing for a short while. But had that artillery simulator been wrapped in nails, I'd have been shredded.
