DUESSELDORF, Germany (Reuters) - Four Arab men accused of planning to bomb Jewish targets in Germany on the orders of militant Islamist leader Abu Musab al-Zarqawi were found guilty on Wednesday at the end of a marathon trial.
"In this case, Abu Musad al-Zarqawi should also be sitting on the defendants' bench," Judge Ottmar Breidling told the court in his explanation of the verdict.
The men received jail sentences of between five and eight years.
Evidence in the trial, which started in February 2004, included wiretapped conversations in which Jordanian militant Zarqawi discussed with group members the state of preparations for the attacks, using codewords such as "honey" and "medicine" to refer to explosives.
"I swear to you, Sheikh, I swear that if you ordered me to die, I would do it," Dhess allegedly told Zarqawi in one of the intercepted conversations in October 2001.
The prosecution case was based on 55 days of testimony from Abdalla, who briefly served as a bodyguard to al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden in Afghanistan. He is now living in Germany under a new identity to protect him against reprisals.

YNET NEWS: "5 KILLED IN HADERA BLAST"
SNIPPET: "Terror returns to Israels cities: Suicide bomber strikes in market in Hadera, north of Tel Aviv and scene of several previous attacks."
ARTICLE SNIPPET #2: "Senior Islamic Jihad figure Abu al-Muamen told Ynet the attack came in response to the killing of the groups West Bank terror leader Louie Saadi earlier this week. He said the attack was only an initial response and added his group and other Palestinian organizations are expected to respond with more attacks. However, al-Muamen refused to officially claim responsibility for the attack.
Earlier, Palestinian sources told Ynet the attack was likely the work of Islamic Jihad and came in response to the killing of Saadi. However, the sources said another organization may have cooperated with the Islamic Jihad in carrying out the attack.
The Islamic Jihad vowed to shake up Israel in retaliation for Saadis killing.
