SAN YSIDRO Customs agents seized $700,000 in hidden cash from a motorist headed for Mexico yesterday, after seizing drugs and arresting a Seattle homicide suspect Thursday.
Agents checking southbound vehicles yesterday morning X-rayed a sport utility vehicle and found 67 small packages of cash hidden in the quarter-panels, U.S. Customs and Border Protection spokesman Vince Bond said.
Bond said the cash, totaling $700,000, was seized because the driver didn't have a U.S. Department of Treasury form that is required when taking more than $10,000 out of the country. It wasn't clear if the driver was arrested.
A 30-year-old U.S. citizen was arrested Thursday when agents found 302 pounds of marijuana in his car trunk, Bond said. Inspectors checking northbound vehicles couldn't open the trunk at first, so they got in by pulling down the back seats. They found the trunk had been filled with spray foam sealant around 24 packages of marijuana.
Also Thursday, Customs agents seized 126 pounds of cocaine from the fuel tank of a large pickup entering the United States. A narcotics dog noticed the scent, and the tank was removed by a mechanic, Bond said. The driver, a 34-year-old Mexican national, was arrested.
Additionally, a man suspected in a fatal stabbing in Seattle was arrested as he tried to enter the United States from Mexico on foot Thursday, Bond said. The man gave inspectors an Alaska identity card, and his name turned up on a list of wanted fugitives. Bond had no details on the homicide, but he said the man was booked into county jail to await an escort back to Washington by Seattle detectives.
