The Threat Matrix

The title refers to a daily report given to the president of the United States detailing the most serious terrorist threats against the country. To tackle those threats, the government has formed a top-notch task force to infiltrate the terror cells and cut off the danger.

"Every morning, the president receives a list of the top ten terrorist threats - this list is known as the threat matrix."

We here at FR are trying to be in conjunction with the daily reports around the world that involve threats. We try to provide a storehouse of information that takes hours of research.

Home grown Islamists may hit US: FBI chief
Full Story

WASHINGTON -- The United States could be attacked by "home grown" Islamist terror groups, the FBI's chief has warned.

FBI Director Robert Mueller told the London Financial Times newspaper in an interview published Thursday that the United States could face attacks from "home-grown terrorism" very similar to the July 7 bombings in London that killed 52 people and wounded another 700, Mueller said.

When asked if the United States could face such attacks from "home-grown groups", Mueller answered emphatically: "Absolutely, it could," the Financial Times said.

Two years ago, Theresa and I were driving down highway 68, when we smelled a 'first time ever smelled- smell", we could
not see a reason for it, the area was not one that should
have smelled.

Almost the fancy alcohol smell from pure alcohol.

We later read of a meth factory being arrested.

Was that what we smelled?

But then in a direct route from us, to the south, which is where our winds blow, there is a gas plant, it is the same
one that killed so many in Bophal, India......

Yes, we fought it, so they put it out of town, so the wind
will take out the whole area, if it has a major release.

We never knew what we smelled that day.

Date: Wed 5 Oct 2005 From: ProMED-mail Source: BBC News, Wed 5 Oct 2005 [edited] _________________________________________________________________ 1918 killer flu 'came from birds' --------------------------------- The Spanish flu virus that killed 50 million people in 1918-19 was probably a strain that originated in birds, research has shown. US scientists have found the 1918 virus shares genetic mutations with the bird flu virus now circulating in Asia. ____________________________________________________________ Writing in Nature -- see ------------------------------------- they say their work underlines the threat the current strain poses to humans worldwide. A second paper in Science reveals another US team has successfully recreated the 1918 virus in mice. The virus is contained at the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC] under stringent safety conditions. It is hoped to carry out experiments to further understand the biological properties that made the virus so virulent. -------------------------------------- The virus was recreated from data produced by painstaking research by a team from the US Armed Forces Institute of Pathology. Working on virus samples from the remains of victims of the 1918 pandemic, the researchers were able to piece together the entire genetic sequence of the virus. They found the virus contained elements that were new to humans of the time, making it highly virulent. Analysis of the final 3 pieces of the virus' genetic code has revealed mutations that have striking similarities to those found in flu viruses found only in birds, such as the H5N1 strain currently found in south east Asia. ----------------------------------- Many experts believe it is only a matter of time before H5N1, or a similar virus, causes many deaths in humans -- possibly after combining [reassorting genome segments] with a human flu strain. Crucially, the mutations identified by the US researchers were found in genes which control the virus' ability to replicate in host cells. The researchers say these mutations may have helped the 1918 virus replicate more efficiently. ------------------------------------- At this stage, they say the H5N1 strain shares only some, and not all, of these mutations. But these mutations may be enough to increase the virulence of the virus, and give it the potential to cause serious human infection without first combining [reassorting genome segments] with a known human flu strain. The researchers believe the 2 other major flu pandemics of the 20th century -- in 1957 and 1968 -- were caused by human flu viruses which acquired 2 or 3 key genes from bird flu virus strains. But they believe the 1918 strain was probably entirely a bird flu virus that adapted to function in humans. ------------------------------------ Julie Gerberding, director of the US Ce nters for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC), said: "By unmasking the 1918 virus we are revealing some of the secrets that will help us predict and prepare for the next pandemic." Dr Jeffery Taubenberger, lead researcher of the Nature study, said: "Determining whether pandemic influenza virus strains can emerge via different pathways will affect the scope and focus of surveillance and prevention efforts." ____________________________________________________________ Warning ------------------------------------- ------- Professor John Oxford, an expert in virology at Queen Mary College, London, said the suggestion that the virus had the potential to jump between humans without first combining [reassorting] with a human virus made it even more of a threat. "This study gives us an extra warning that H5N1 needs to be taken even more seriously than it has been up to now," he said. Dr Terrence Tumpey, of the US CDC, defended the decision to recreate the 1918 flu virus. He said: "We felt we had to recreate the virus and run these experiments to understand the biological properties that made the 1918 virus so exceptionally deadly. "We wanted to identify the specific genes responsible for its virulence, with the hope of designing antivirals or other interventions that would work against virulent pandemic or epidemic influenza viruses." -------------------------------------- -- ProMED-mail [The Nature paper is published in the 5 Oct 2005 online edition () _______________________________________________________________ and is entitled: "Large-scale sequencing of human influenza reveals the dynamic nature of viral genome evolution. The human influenza A virus continues to thrive even among populations with widespread access to vaccines, and continues to be a major cause of morbidity and mortality. The virus mutates from year to year, making the existing vaccines ineffective on a regular basis, and requiring that new strains be chosen for a new vaccine. Less-frequent major changes, known as antigenic shift, create new strains against which the human population has little protective immunity, thereby causing worldwide pandemics. The most recent pandemics include the 1918 'Spanish' flu, one of the most deadly outbreaks in recorded history, which killed 30-50 million people worldwide, the 1957 'Asian' flu, and the 1968 'Hong Kong' flu (3). _______________________________________________________________ Motivated by the need for a better understanding of influenza evolution, we have developed flexible protocols that make it possible to apply large-scale sequencing techniques to the highly variable influenza genome. Here we report the results of sequencing 209 complete genomes of the human influenza A virus, encompassing a total of 2 821 103 nucleotides. In addition to increasing markedly the number of publicly available, complete influenza virus genomes, we have discovered several anomalies in these first 209 genomes that demonstrate the dynamic nature of influenza transmission and evolution. This new, large-scale sequencing effort promises to provide a more comprehensive picture of the evolution of influenza viruses and of their pattern of transmission through human and animal populations. All data from this project are being deposited, without delay, in public archives." - Mod.CP] ________________________________________________________________ [see also: Influenza activity update & 2005/2006 vaccine reco... 20050915.2726] 2004 ---- Influenza A virus, virulence, 1918 pandemic strain 20041007.2754 Influenza A virus, virulence, 1918 pandemic strain... 20041008.2757, 20041009.2769, 20041011.2780, 20041013.2790, 20041013.2793, 20041015.2810] .............................cp/jw ______________________________________________________________ ***************I still have several of the above 2004 articles in my Yahoo box.....this worried me then and I think it is safe to say that the germs they dug up from the 1918 graves has gotten loose. I'm having a hard time reading these proposals from Cornyn. Not being from Cornyn state, I've did not ever research his background or voting records. According to OpenSecrets he is heavily supported by special interest groups. I noticed the Bass PAC supported Cornyn, Rangel, and Reid. What agenda do they share? Is Cornyn a RINO?

Being raised by a senior military officer, I watched the many men and women dedicate their lives to serve and protect our great nation. It grieves me to no end to see the consequences of this creeping silent war that has snuck up on our people. The socialist, globalist project of the Soviet Union didn't work. You would think they would learn from history...

Very interesting times these are... praying for the sovereignty of our nation and for God's full blessing and protection.

Physicians Ill-Prepared to Diagnose
or Treat Bioterrorism Diseases

By Gary Stephenson
Johns Hopkins Medicine

More than one-half of 631 physicians tested were unable to correctly
diagnose diseases caused by agents most likely to be used by bioterrorists,
such as smallpox, anthrax, botulism and plague, according to a Johns
Hopkins study published in the Sept. 26 issue of Archives of Internal
Medicine.

However, test scores improved dramatically for the same physicians after
they completed an online training course in diagnosing and managing
these diseases caused by bioterrorism agents, according to the study.

"Most American physicians in practice today have never seen any cases of
these diseases in their practice," said Sara Cosgrove, an assistant professor
in the School of Medicine's Division of Infectious Diseases. "Preparation will
be key to dealing with a major catastrophe, such as a major bioterrorist
attack. Education and training health care providers in disease recognition,
treatment and prevention strategies have the potential to significantly limit
the effects of a bioterrorism attack."

In the study, 631 physicians at 30 internal medicine residency programs in
16 states and Washington, D.C., were tested before and after taking an
online course in bioterrorism disease on how to recognize and treat
bioterrorism-related diseases. On the pretest, correct diagnosis of diseases
due to bioterrorism agents was smallpox, 50.7 percent; anthrax, 70.5
percent; botulism, 49.6 percent; and plague, 16.3 percent, for an average
of 46.8 percent, the researchers report. Correct diagnosis averaged 79
percent after completion of the course. Correct management of smallpox in
the pretest was 14.6 percent; anthrax, 17 percent; botulism, 60.2 percent;
and plague 9.7 percent, for an average of 25.4 percent. Correct
management averaged 79.1 percent after course completion.

Other Johns Hopkins researchers involved in the study are Stephen Sisson,
Trish Perl and Xiaoyan Song.

Wow. I was off line for a bit and just saw your post. The pieces of this jihad puzzle are coming together. You'd think it would be major breaking news by now....... considering that we are in a war on terror because of an attack on our soil. I'm starting to get a little angry that now press conference or alerts are going out about this.
