Two years ago, Theresa and I were driving down highway 68, when we smelled a 'first time ever smelled- smell", we could
not see a reason for it, the area was not one that should
have smelled.

Almost the fancy alcohol smell from pure alcohol.

We later read of a meth factory being arrested.

Was that what we smelled?

But then in a direct route from us, to the south, which is where our winds blow, there is a gas plant, it is the same
one that killed so many in Bophal, India......

Yes, we fought it, so they put it out of town, so the wind
will take out the whole area, if it has a major release.

We never knew what we smelled that day.

Date: Wed 5 Oct 2005 From: ProMED-mail Source: BBC News, Wed 5 Oct 2005 [edited] _________________________________________________________________ 1918 killer flu 'came from birds' --------------------------------- The Spanish flu virus that killed 50 million people in 1918-19 was probably a strain that originated in birds, research has shown. US scientists have found the 1918 virus shares genetic mutations with the bird flu virus now circulating in Asia. ____________________________________________________________ Writing in Nature -- see ------------------------------------- they say their work underlines the threat the current strain poses to humans worldwide. A second paper in Science reveals another US team has successfully recreated the 1918 virus in mice. The virus is contained at the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC] under stringent safety conditions. It is hoped to carry out experiments to further understand the biological properties that made the virus so virulent. -------------------------------------- The virus was recreated from data produced by painstaking research by a team from the US Armed Forces Institute of Pathology. Working on virus samples from the remains of victims of the 1918 pandemic, the researchers were able to piece together the entire genetic sequence of the virus. They found the virus contained elements that were new to humans of the time, making it highly virulent. Analysis of the final 3 pieces of the virus' genetic code has revealed mutations that have striking similarities to those found in flu viruses found only in birds, such as the H5N1 strain currently found in south east Asia. ----------------------------------- Many experts believe it is only a matter of time before H5N1, or a similar virus, causes many deaths in humans -- possibly after combining [reassorting genome segments] with a human flu strain. Crucially, the mutations identified by the US researchers were found in genes which control the virus' ability to replicate in host cells. The researchers say these mutations may have helped the 1918 virus replicate more efficiently. ------------------------------------- At this stage, they say the H5N1 strain shares only some, and not all, of these mutations. But these mutations may be enough to increase the virulence of the virus, and give it the potential to cause serious human infection without first combining [reassorting genome segments] with a known human flu strain. The researchers believe the 2 other major flu pandemics of the 20th century -- in 1957 and 1968 -- were caused by human flu viruses which acquired 2 or 3 key genes from bird flu virus strains. But they believe the 1918 strain was probably entirely a bird flu virus that adapted to function in humans. ------------------------------------ Julie Gerberding, director of the US Ce nters for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC), said: "By unmasking the 1918 virus we are revealing some of the secrets that will help us predict and prepare for the next pandemic." Dr Jeffery Taubenberger, lead researcher of the Nature study, said: "Determining whether pandemic influenza virus strains can emerge via different pathways will affect the scope and focus of surveillance and prevention efforts." ____________________________________________________________ Warning ------------------------------------- ------- Professor John Oxford, an expert in virology at Queen Mary College, London, said the suggestion that the virus had the potential to jump between humans without first combining [reassorting] with a human virus made it even more of a threat. "This study gives us an extra warning that H5N1 needs to be taken even more seriously than it has been up to now," he said. Dr Terrence Tumpey, of the US CDC, defended the decision to recreate the 1918 flu virus. He said: "We felt we had to recreate the virus and run these experiments to understand the biological properties that made the 1918 virus so exceptionally deadly. "We wanted to identify the specific genes responsible for its virulence, with the hope of designing antivirals or other interventions that would work against virulent pandemic or epidemic influenza viruses." -------------------------------------- -- ProMED-mail [The Nature paper is published in the 5 Oct 2005 online edition () _______________________________________________________________ and is entitled: "Large-scale sequencing of human influenza reveals the dynamic nature of viral genome evolution. The human influenza A virus continues to thrive even among populations with widespread access to vaccines, and continues to be a major cause of morbidity and mortality. The virus mutates from year to year, making the existing vaccines ineffective on a regular basis, and requiring that new strains be chosen for a new vaccine. Less-frequent major changes, known as antigenic shift, create new strains against which the human population has little protective immunity, thereby causing worldwide pandemics. The most recent pandemics include the 1918 'Spanish' flu, one of the most deadly outbreaks in recorded history, which killed 30-50 million people worldwide, the 1957 'Asian' flu, and the 1968 'Hong Kong' flu (3). _______________________________________________________________ Motivated by the need for a better understanding of influenza evolution, we have developed flexible protocols that make it possible to apply large-scale sequencing techniques to the highly variable influenza genome. Here we report the results of sequencing 209 complete genomes of the human influenza A virus, encompassing a total of 2 821 103 nucleotides. In addition to increasing markedly the number of publicly available, complete influenza virus genomes, we have discovered several anomalies in these first 209 genomes that demonstrate the dynamic nature of influenza transmission and evolution. This new, large-scale sequencing effort promises to provide a more comprehensive picture of the evolution of influenza viruses and of their pattern of transmission through human and animal populations. All data from this project are being deposited, without delay, in public archives." - Mod.CP] ________________________________________________________________ [see also: Influenza activity update & 2005/2006 vaccine reco... 20050915.2726] 2004 ---- Influenza A virus, virulence, 1918 pandemic strain 20041007.2754 Influenza A virus, virulence, 1918 pandemic strain... 20041008.2757, 20041009.2769, 20041011.2780, 20041013.2790, 20041013.2793, 20041015.2810] .............................cp/jw ______________________________________________________________ ***************I still have several of the above 2004 articles in my Yahoo box.....this worried me then and I think it is safe to say that the germs they dug up from the 1918 graves has gotten loose. Physicians Ill-Prepared to Diagnose
or Treat Bioterrorism Diseases

By Gary Stephenson
Johns Hopkins Medicine

More than one-half of 631 physicians tested were unable to correctly
diagnose diseases caused by agents most likely to be used by bioterrorists,
such as smallpox, anthrax, botulism and plague, according to a Johns
Hopkins study published in the Sept. 26 issue of Archives of Internal
Medicine.

However, test scores improved dramatically for the same physicians after
they completed an online training course in diagnosing and managing
these diseases caused by bioterrorism agents, according to the study.

"Most American physicians in practice today have never seen any cases of
these diseases in their practice," said Sara Cosgrove, an assistant professor
in the School of Medicine's Division of Infectious Diseases. "Preparation will
be key to dealing with a major catastrophe, such as a major bioterrorist
attack. Education and training health care providers in disease recognition,
treatment and prevention strategies have the potential to significantly limit
the effects of a bioterrorism attack."

In the study, 631 physicians at 30 internal medicine residency programs in
16 states and Washington, D.C., were tested before and after taking an
online course in bioterrorism disease on how to recognize and treat
bioterrorism-related diseases. On the pretest, correct diagnosis of diseases
due to bioterrorism agents was smallpox, 50.7 percent; anthrax, 70.5
percent; botulism, 49.6 percent; and plague, 16.3 percent, for an average
of 46.8 percent, the researchers report. Correct diagnosis averaged 79
percent after completion of the course. Correct management of smallpox in
the pretest was 14.6 percent; anthrax, 17 percent; botulism, 60.2 percent;
and plague 9.7 percent, for an average of 25.4 percent. Correct
management averaged 79.1 percent after course completion.

Other Johns Hopkins researchers involved in the study are Stephen Sisson,
Trish Perl and Xiaoyan Song.

Insurgents' video shows
beheading of two Iraqis

By Simon Johnson

DUBAI (Reuters) - An Iraqi insurgent group posted a video on the
Internet on Wednesday showing the apparent beheading of two Iraqis
it said had spied for the U.S. military.

The tape issued by the Army of Ansar al-Sunna, a major insurgent
group in Iraq, showed the men admitting they had gathered
information for U.S. forces.

They were later shown being beheaded by insurgents.

The video, which was dated Sept. 12, 2005, was the first to show a
beheading since January. Many such tapes were released by
insurgents in 2004.

The video showed both men being questioned by insurgents off
camera about the way in which they found and gave information to
U.S. forces.

"I work with American and Jewish spies against the mujahideen and
today I fell into the hands of the mujahideen," said Shaker Mahmoud
Jassem who was wearing a white robe.

"Everyone who works with the Americans and Jews should leave their
job. I advise everyone to join the jihad (holy war)," he said.

The second man, Riyadh Najm Abdalla, said he worked as a security
guard but was also a spy who had informed on Saudi insurgents in the
Baghdad area.

The two men, sitting against a backdrop of a red carpet on a wall,
seemed calm when answering the questions.

They were then taken outside and held down as their heads were
severed and placed on their bodies.

Militant groups have kidnapped scores of Iraqis they say worked for
U.S. forces, often beheading them. Militants have also targeted
Westerners and Arabs in Iraq in their campaign against U.S.-led forces
and U.S.-backed Iraqi government.

Last January, al Qaeda's arm in Iraq said it beheaded two Iraqis who
said they worked at a U.S. base in Iraq.

"The Origins of al Qaeda's Ideology:
Implications for U.S. Strategy"

"The fight against the enemy nearest to you
has precedence over the fight against the
enemy farther away. . . . In all Muslim
countries the enemy has the reins of power.
The enemy is the present rulers."
--Muhammad Abd al-Salam Faraj, tried and
hanged in connection with the 1981
assassination of Anwar al-Sadat1

"Victory for the Islamic movements . . . cannot
be attained unless these movements possess
an Islamic base in the heart of the Arab
region." --Ayman al-Zawahiri, Bin Laden
deputy, 20012

"We do not want stability in Iran, Iraq, Syria,
Lebanon, and even Saudi Arabia. . . . The real
issue is not whether, but how to destabilize.
We have to ensure the fulfillment of the
democratic revolution." --Michael Ledeen,
American Enterprise Institute, 20023

The leader of Sadat's assassins, Bin Laden's chief
ideologue, and a leading American neoconservative
supporter of Israel all call for a revolutionary
transformation of the Middle East. However, the United
States, the existing Arab regimes, and the traditional Sunni
clerical establishments all share an interest in avoiding
instability and revolution. This shared interest makes the
establishments in the Sunni world America's natural
partners in the struggle against al Qaeda and similar
movements. If American strategists fail to understand and
exploit the divide between the establishments and the
revolutionaries within Sunni Islam, the United States will
play into the radicals' hands, and turn fence-sitting Sunnis
into enemies.

(clipped to the middle of article)*****

Mustafa, Zawahiri, and Bin Laden

After Sadat's assassination and the ensuing crackdown on
both the Muslim Brothers and the revolutionary Salafists in
Egypt, some Salafists gravitated to a sect headed by an
engineer named Shukri Mustafa. Mustafa's group, building
on Qutb's writings, preached the "denunciation as
unbelievers" (takfir) of almost all of society, and separation
from it. The traditional religious establishment of Al-Azhar
denounced these "takfiris" as heretics. Mustafa was
hanged in 1977 for the kidnapping and murder of a senior
Al-Azhar cleric.17

The guerilla war against the Soviet occupation of
Afghanistan from 1979 to 1989 was the incubator for the
contemporary stage in the development of revolutionary
Salafist doctrine and strategy. Many Arab volunteers in
Afghanistan coalesced around revolutionary Salafists who
remained outsiders to the Sunni clerical establishment,
even as some of the Arab regimes, and the United States,
funded them. Many Arabs in Afghanistan came under the
influence of the Egyptian physician Ayman al-Zawahiri, a
prolific writer whom many found persuasive, but who, like
all the revolutionary Salafists, was condemned by the
Al-Azhar clerical establishment.

Zawahiri claims to have known Faraj personally; the doctor
eventually became a leader of one of the Egyptian Jihad
groups.18 Zawahiri met Osama bin Laden in Peshawar,
Pakistan, during the guerilla campaign against the Soviets.
The two collaborated closely, Zawahiri contributing his skills
as an ideologist, Bin Laden his organizational talents and
financial resources. The two publicly announced the merger
of their groups in 1998, completing al Qaeda's
development into the group that challenges the United
States today.

Al Qaeda Strategy Today

Zawahiri remains Bin Laden's deputy as leader of al Qaeda,
and the Egyptian doctor's writings provide the best insight
into the terrorist organization's current strategic thinking.
In his 2001 book Knights Under the Prophet's Banner,
Zawahiri identifies and prioritizes the goals of what he calls
the "the revolutionary fundamentalist movement": first,
achievement of ideological coherence and organization,
then struggle against the existing regimes of the Muslim
world, followed by the establishment of a "genuinely"
Muslim state "at the heart of Arab world."19 Zawahiri
views the current stage of the jihad as one of worldwide,
revolutionary struggle, to be waged by means of violence,
political action, and propaganda against the secular Muslim
regimes and secularized Muslim elites.20 Zawahiri argues
that because the terrain in the key Arab countries is not
suitable for guerilla war, Islamists need to conduct political
action among the masses, combined with an urban
terrorist campaign against the secular regimes,
supplemented with attacks on "the external enemy"-i.e.,
the United States and Israel-as a means of propaganda
that will strengthen the jihad's popular support.

Zawahiri wants his Salafist readers to keep in mind that
the Arab establishments are the real targets, even if
"confining the battle to the domestic enemy . . . will not be
feasible in this stage of the battle."21 Highly visible attacks
against external enemies, and the inevitable retaliation,
Zawahiri explains, will rally ordinary Muslims to the radicals'
cause, strengthening the main struggle, the one against
the current regimes of the Muslim world. As Zawahiri writes
in Knights:

The jihad movement must . . . make room for the Muslim
nation to participate with it in the jihad for the sake of
empowerment. The Muslim nation will not participate with
[the jihad movement] unless the slogans of the mujahidin
are understood by the masses. . . . The one slogan that
has been well understood by the nation and to which it
has been responding for the past 50 years is the call for
jihad against Israel. In addition to this slogan, the [Muslim]
nation in [the 1990s] is geared against the US presence.
[The Muslim nation] has responded favorably to the call for
the jihad against the Americans. . . . [T]he jihad movement
moved to the center of the leadership of the [Muslim]
nation when it adopted the slogan of liberating the nation
from its external enemies. . . . [Striking at the United States
would force the Americans to] personally wage the battle
against the Muslims, which means that the battle will turn
into a clear-cut jihad against infidels.22

This passage shows that the revolutionary Salafists do not
expect to actually defeat America or its allies (whatever al
Qaeda propaganda may claim). Instead, spectacular
terrorist attacks are a means toward the end of changing
the character of the conflict, changing it from a campaign
waged by a small faction of extremists against the regimes
of Muslim world, into "a clear-cut jihad against infidels,"
which would, the Salafists hope, attract wide support
among the Muslim masses.23

Zawahiri views the current phase of the jihad as a
revolutionary war, and the ideological component of the
struggle is thus very important. Like Mao24 and the North
Vietnamese General Vo Nguyen Giap,25 Zawahiri considers
political and propaganda action to be just as important at
some stages as military efforts are. "The jihad must
dedicate one of its wings to work with the masses, preach,
provide services. . . . [T]he people will not love us unless
they feel that we love them, care about them, and are
ready to defend them."26 This last point-convincing the
people that the revolutionary Salafists are "ready to
defend them"-again illustrates how Zawahiri sees
high-profile terrorist strikes against the external enemy as
a means of making propaganda for the Muslim masses. He
calls on his followers, at this stage of the struggle, to
"launch a battle for orienting the [Muslim] nation" by
striking at the United States and Israel.27 Thus, al Qaeda's
immediate goal is not to destroy Israel or even drive the
United States out of the Middle East; rather, it is to "orient
the nation."

Police files fiasco (Australia)
Tanya Giles, Kelly Ryan and Brendan Roberts
06oct05

SECRET files were used as scrap paper at a police station in
another damaging security bungle. The confidential files were
left on the counter of the Frankston station for the public to
use as notepaper, according to the man who exposed the
debacle.

The Herald Sun has learned the nine pages of LEAP data
included information on several Victorians, including the
address, phone numbers and movements of a 19-year-old
girl whose mobile phone had been stolen.

One document included details of an elderly man police
feared was suicidal and another was a description of a
suspect.

Rebecca Dale, 19, of Baxter, said she was shocked her
personal details had been exposed.

"It's scary. Some weirdo could have all my details. I gave the
police my address and my phone numbers and now anyone
could have them," Ms Dale said.

"You're supposed to be able to trust the police. They
obviously have no respect for my privacy."

Police said the documents were stolen from behind the
counter.

They have charged the man who took them with theft,
leading to Opposition claims they were covering up their
mistake.

The revelations come only weeks after the Herald Sun
revealed 20,000 pages of secret police files were mistakenly
released to a prison whistleblower.

Acting Deputy Commissioner Noel Ashby yesterday admitted
the sensitive files should not have been used as scrap paper.

Mr Ashby said the documents should have been shredded
and said a directive had been sent yesterday warning all
police to dispose of sensitive documents.

Pakistan Claims Arrested Of Taliban Spokesman Abdul Latif Hakimi
Oct 05, 2005
Source: BBC

The authorities in Pakistan say they have arrested leading Taleban spokesman Latifullah Hakimi. "Our
security forces captured him today, and he is in our custody," said Interior Minister Aftab Khan
Sherpao.

Mr Hakimi has spoken regularly on behalf of the Taleban, who US-led forces drove from power in
Afghanistan after the 11 September, 2001 attacks.

Pakistan Information Minister Sheikh Rashid Ahmed said he was detained in Balochistan province. The
Taleban oppose the US-backed government of President Hamid Karzai in Kabul. They have been
blamed for a wave of attacks, mainly in the south and east of Afghanistan this year.

Mr Karzai's government has frequently accused Pakistan of not doing enough to curb incursions by
Taleban fighters and other militants, which it says are based on Pakistani soil. Islamabad denies the
allegations.

'Blow'

Pakistan's authorities publicly withdrew their support for the Taleban after the ruling Afghan militia
were ousted four years ago, but Pakistan's Western allies have accused it of not severing ties
completely.

The BBC's Barbara Plett in Islamabad says Mr Hakimi's arrest is being seen as a message that
Islamabad is doing whatever it can. She says analysts see this as a bigger blow to the Taleban than
the capture of many of its military commanders, because Latifullah Hakimi was regarded as the voice
of the group.

Mr Hakimi's exact ties to the Taleban have not been verified, but according to Afghan and US officials
quoted by the Associated Press news agency, he is believed to represent factions within the group.
He was a key contact for journalists seeking to establish whether or not the Taleban had carried out
particular attacks in Afghanistan.

He usually spoke by satellite phone, occasionally switching to mobile phones registered in Afghanistan
or Pakistan.

'Big Success'

He last spoke to the BBC on Thursday, telling Rahimullah Yusufzai in Peshawar that a blast that killed
12 people near an army base in Kabul last week was caused by a Taleban bomber. Mr Sherpao told
private Pakistani TV station, Geo, that Mr Hakimi's capture is a "big success" for the law enforcement
agencies.

A spokesman for President Karzai said he hoped the arrest would lead to other Taleban leaders being
detained.

"We are grateful for the arrest of Hakimi by the Pakistani government. He was a person who claimed
the lives of many innocent people like clerics, doctors, teachers," the spokesman, Khaliq Ahmed
Khaliq, told the BBC.

Strength

Al-Qaida probably has several thousand members and associates. The
arrests of senior-level al-Qaida operatives have interrupted some
terrorist plots. Also serves as a focal point or umbrella organization for
a worldwide network that includes many Sunni Islamic extremist
groups, some members of al-Gama’a al-Islamiyya, the Islamic
Movement of Uzbekistan, and the Harakat ul-Mujahidin.

Location/Area of Operation

Al-Qaida has cells worldwide and is reinforced by its ties to Sunni
extremist networks. Was based in Afghanistan until Coalition forces
removed the Taliban from power in late 2001. Al-Qaida has dispersed
in small groups across South Asia, Southeast Asia, and the Middle East
and probably will attempt to carry out future attacks against US
interests.

External Aid

Al-Qaida maintains moneymaking front businesses, solicits donations
from likeminded supporters, and illicitly siphons funds from donations
to Muslim charitable organizations. US and international efforts to
block al-Qaida funding has hampered the group’s ability to obtain
money.

The Demographic Battlespace

In accurately de€ning the contextual and cultural
population of the task force battlespace, it became rapidly
apparent that we needed to develop a keen
understanding of demographics as well as the cultural
intricacies that drive the Iraqi population.3 Although
tactically distinct in scope, density, and challenges, we
operationally divided the populace into three categories
that help de€ne the battlespace: anti-Iraqi forces,
supporters, and fence-sitters.

Anti-Iraqi forces. The €rst group de€ned as insurgents
(and terrorists) were those who cannot be changed, who
cannot be inuenced, and who, although politically and
ethnically different in scope, had essentially the same
desired endstate- to perceptually de-legitimize the
current Iraqi Government and drive a wedge between the
Iraqi populace and coalition forces.4 Through forcing a
demonstration of the inability of the government to bring
security, projects, hope, and prosperity to the city of
Baghdad and greater Iraq and increasing the
psychological distance between coalition forces and the
Iraqi populace through increased limited use of force, they
turn the populace to accept their message.5 Their aim is
disruption for political gain; their organization is cellular
based and organized crime-like in terms of its rapid ability
to take advantage of tactical and operational gaps. Iraqi
insurgents take full advantage of the Arab Bedouin-based
tribal culture so important to understanding the
battlespace. They target the disenfranchised
neighborhoods that see little to no progress, recruiting
from those who see, through the insurgent, basic services
being ful€lled, societal leadership, safety being provided,
and ultimately, direction given.

When the insurgent achieves his goal, the methods of
resistance among the populace take a spectrum of forms
ranging from avoidance to sympathetic obliviousness or
passing of information to direct attacks against coalition
forces. Intimidation of the people, in particular, those who
work for the coalition, public sector employees, and
government of€cials is a technique used quite effectively.
The insurgents are small in relative size and cellular in
design operating normally off of intent, but their effect can
and does achieve tactical and operational signi€cance. It
takes few insurgents speci€cally targeting a small group
of select individuals to achieve resonance across a large
portion of the population.

In an effort to describe the effect, a corollary would be
the effect the D.C. Sniper had on the Capital and Nation in
2002. Fear gripped the city and the Nation, producing a
paralysis that had a quanti€able effect on the economy.
Every white van was suspect. People feared stopping at
gas stations and parking at retail establishments because
they could be the next victims. Multiply this 100-fold and
you can understand the effect and role anti-Iraqi forces
have from an intimidation perspective on the populace.

What made our challenge completely different from any
other our military has endured is the unique variable of
international terrorism. Terrorist aims do not lie with the
interests of the Iraqi populace but, rather, global
objectives played out on the world stage through
manipulation of media and the resonance associated with
a "spectacular event."

Direct-action killing or capturing the terrorist was (and is)
the only option to immediately mitigate their strategic
effect. We also chose an indirect approach, through
co-option of the populace using information operations, to
deny the terrorist physical and psychological sanctuary in
an effort to thwart their objectives.

Supporters. The second demographic consisted of
supporters who represented the coalition force base of
support throughout neighborhoods, districts, and the
government. The supporters see the future of Iraq
through cooperation with the currently established Iraqi
Government and coalition forces. The reality is that, when
queried, most supporters preferred the removal of
coalition forces from Baghdad and Iraq, but they
simultaneously recognized the relative importance of the
security provided and the ow of funding from these
contributing nations to the short- and long-term future of
Iraq.

While a large majority of Iraqis do not like the presence of
coalition forces, during a February 2005 Baghdad survey,
the question was posed as to when coalition forces
should leave Iraq. In the Task Force Baghdad area of
operations, 72 percent of those polled stated that only
after certain security and economic conditions were met
would it be appropriate for coalition forces to leave. This
clearly demonstrated to the task force that although the
Iraqi populace inherently did not like the presence of
coalition forces in their country, they understood the
value of that presence and the need to €rst establish
certain conditions before withdrawal began.

Fence-sitters. Finally, we had those on the proverbial
fence. We considered the fence-sitters as the operational
center of gravity for both Task Force Baghdad and
insurgent forces. They are the bulk of the populace, and
they are waiting to decide who will get their support.
From the intelligentsia to the poor and uneducated who
have little or no hope, the fence-sitters are waiting on
clear signs of progress and direction before casting their
support.

The fence-sitters become the base from which power is
derived. Strong evidence exists that suggests Muqtada Al
Sadr's attacks against coalition forces in early August
2004 were initiated because of the visible signs of
progress manifested by the number of projects and local
labor force hires that threatened his scope of power and
ability to recruit €ghters within the Shi'a population.
Insurgents can clearly inuence the fence-sitters by
attacking visible symbols of government services and
provoking government repression, both of which discredit
the legitimacy of the government. In a further
demonstration of potency, the insurgents then step in
and provide a shadow government.6

Police Investigate New York Subway Terror Threat

Oct. 6, 2005 — The New York City Police Department is investigating
what it deems a credible tip that 19 operatives have been deployed to
New York to place bombs in the subway, and security in the subways
will be increased, sources told ABC News.

While the police department is taking the threat seriously, it is also
urging the public not to be alarmed because – while the source is
credible – the information has not been verified.

According to sources in intelligence, emergency services and police
headquarters, when three Iraqi insurgents were recently arrested
during a raid by a joint FBI-CIA team, one of those caught disclosed
the threat. Because it slipped out during the arrest, the plot was
deemed credible.

After several days of work, sources said, the NYPD is increasingly
concerned because it has been unable to discredit the initial source
and additional information from the source.

The 19 operatives were to place improvised explosive devices in the
subways using briefcases, according to two sources.
