Gun law critics fear state will become O.K. Corral
Sarasota Herald-Tribune ^ | 10/2/05 | Latisha Gray

Joe Brower says everyday life is like "Wild Kingdom." It's survival of the fittest. And in his world, criminals don't attack people with guns; people with guns are the strong ones.

If some criminal mistakes him for prey, as of today, a new law gives him the right to shoot with the gun he keeps at his side.

"A lion out in Africa doesn't go for the strongest zebra," said Brower, a 44-year-old software engineer. "It goes for the weakest. Human predators do the exact same thing. If you are armed, that makes you stronger."

The "Stand Your Ground" law says instead of running, people who fear for their lives have the right to defend themselves -- no matter where they are.

Gun owners like Brower say the new law will make criminals think twice before they attack. But others who feel uneasy about the legislation say it could turn Florida into the Wild West.

One national group, The Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, is warning tourists to stay away from Florida for their own safety. Visitors to the state get wide-eyed when they hear about the new law.

Actually I'm doing a special this month. I'll punch your card for every car theft and after the fifth one you get a free dozen donuts.

Pizza and cop. Apples and oranges. Considering that officers don't get sent until the dispatcher gives them the info. I wonder if I could deliver pizzas and...nevermind.

Only suicidal, emotional misfits would not want to defend themselves and their family. Who, in their right mind, would want to visit a place full of that kind of human tripe?

Yeah, "wide-eyed" with anticipation of seeing and, for a time, living with those free Americans who openly demonstrate their love of liberty. Those who visit my state have told me this many times.

Hey there. Funny you should ask, my brother and I were talking about it this morning. If I can get away from schoolwork for a couple hours, I want to head out tomorrow. It's that or kayak. Since it would be nice to do something that doesn't require sitting, shooting it is.

These people are NEVER right about the effects of citizens with guns. With all the concealed-carries that got passed, just name ONE PLACE where it turned into Blood Bath Central. To continually ignore these facts simply weakens all their arguments over the rest of the gun issues, therefore I encourage them to writing such drivel.

The Brady campaign in Florida is misrepresenting the law. They are stating that "road rage" may place a tourist in jeopardy because of the new law.

Nothing could be farther from the truth. The "new law" simply does away with the prior stipulation that the home owner or legal resident need to try and avoid the conflict ... in the home ... not anyplace in public.

Perhaps some hotels and other businesses will sue, should they see a loss of revenue from the false advertisement.

I frankly feel a bit uneasy about such indiscriminate access. There are bad guys and irresponsible guys out there, after all.

And what makes you think that those same bad guys were not carrying guns without a license before it was made legal? CCL laws don't cause more criminals to carry guns, they just allow law abiding people to carry guns without becoming criminals themselves. Laws against concealed carry aren't any more likely to be obeyed by criminals than are any other laws.

There should not be any laws against law abiding people going armed. The only practical reason for outlawing the carry of guns by known felons is that it gives prosecutors one more charge to file against a previously convicted criminal who is caught committing another crime while armed. Those laws certainly won't stop a criminal from going armed, breaking laws is why they are called criminals.

"I can see someone innocently relying on this law and thinking they have a license to kill."

How can someone "innocently" assume they have a license to kill? Or am I misunderstanding him in thinking his implication is "license to murder"? Condemnation of murder is one of the few laws that've been found common to nearly every culture examined. Even most cannibals have rules agains murder - it's just that they define murder as killing family and friends, which means killing those outside their group is okay. ;)

I can certainly imagine some thug thinking he can take advantage of the law to kill someone and claim he was acting in self defense - but that ain't an innocent act on his part.

"One national group, The Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, is warning tourists to stay away from Florida for their own safety."

Sure they should be scared. If I were a bad guy, who would I rather rob/carjack/mug..a Florida resident who MAY be armed, or a tourist couple straight out of the airport who I KNOW doesn't have a weapon??...

I guess The Brady Bunch would rather tourists go to places like D.C., Boston, Detroit, South Central L.A....you know...gun control paradises that have HUGE gun crime/murder rates.

The Brady Bunch NEVER learned..."an ARMED society is a POLITE society!"

It wasn't innocent, in this case it was very calculated. I think case definitely proves the "example" that some of the law enforcement officials were worried would happen.

Dude 1 is ticked off at Dude 2 because of a woman. Dude 1 tells Dude2 to come over for a beer at 10 pm, Dude1 tells Dude2 the door is jammed, go come in through the bedroom window and boom!
